Military records help
« on: Saturday 15 November 14 17:22 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I would like some help and suggestions please. I know my Great Grandfather served in the first world war, and I am trying to find out which regiment he served on. I am using ancestry.co.uk but when I search the war records with his name I find several soldiers with his name in dofferent regiments. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance

hi and welcome to rootschat  ;D

I suggest you go onto the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website http://www.cwgc.org/ search for your great grandfather and all the ones there died, which it will show you their reg number, so you can start to exclude them from the list you have found on ancestry, which hopefully narrows the numbers down somewhat

If you post his name, year of birth, whether he was married, and where he lived, it might help us help you. For example, he might be named in a local newspaper as wounded.

Well you are two people less to deal with at least, look at the regiments the rest joined, compared to where he lived. This takes some research, not everything is black and white, look at the images of the service records where he lived, who next of kin was, occupation, address on joining...simple FH research

He must have married Mary Ellerton. The 1911 census shows them *

* 1911 Census , England & Wales , information removed as per RC rules.

Yes, that's him. But it's the military records section I'm struggling with to find out which regiment he served in  :(
