Mary McClafferty born abt 1840 Donegal
« on: Saturday 29 December 12 05:46 GMT (UK) »
G'day from down under
I'm looking for any information about Mary McCalfferty who was said to be born somewhere in Donegal about 1840.
Her death certificate suggest she may have been from Letterkenny and other documents suggest she was from Doe.  I have no further evidence of her place of birth.
Mary had 2 sisters named Ann and Jane McClafferty.
I think Mary's father was John McClafferty and her mother could have been Mary/Marjory Ferry (or maybe Terry)
It seems Mary's 2 younger sisters mother was Jane, suggesting Mary's father John may have married twice.
Mary, who was also know as Marjory, sponsored both her sister to Sydney, New South Wales and it appears Mary came out on the Donegal Relief Fund.
Mary is another of my family history research long term  brick walls! ::)
Can anyone make any further suggestions or assistance.  :)
Cheerio and thanks in advance  G

Thanks for the replies.  The http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal website is very useful and has given me something to work with.
I don't have a parish for Mary McClafferty however her sister Ann (born about 1855, who came to Aust with assistance from Mary, was noted as living at Carrawcannon, Falcarragh, Donegal in  1879 when Mary paid 2 pound Immigration Deposit.  The Rev McFadden, PP, was her reference. It was further noted that Ann had a sister Jane living in Sydney, NSW. Ann came out on 'La Hogue' arriving in Sydney 23 Oct 1880.
Mary's sister Jane (born about 1852) was also an assisted immigrant. Jane arrived on 'Dunbar Castle' in 1877.  Annotation on immigration record says 'Sister, Mrs Quirk, Campbell St, Balmain.'
Mary McClafferty's first husband was John Quirk and second husband  William Woodman George
It is my guess that Mary's father John McClafferty was deceased when Ann and Jane migrated as only their mother is mentioned on their immigration records.
The above is most of what I know about Mary, Ann and Jane before they arrived in Australia.
Any further assistance would also be gratefully appreciated.
Cheerio and Happy New Year  G

Griffiths Valuation for 1857 records 3 McClafferty farms (2 Johns & Denis) in the townland of Carrowcanon.

6 McClafferty households there in the 1901 census:

Thanks JJ for the alternative spellings - couple there I had not encountered and have found the Mc or Mac was sometimes dropped.
All makes for fun research!
