Morley Family
« on: Friday 03 October 14 17:50 BST (UK) »
Hi, I have an ancestor stating his place of birth as Scotland in the 1871 census, name John Murley, born 1798.  I know from his marriage certificate that his father's name is James but, other than that, I can trace nothing about his earlier life.  Does anyone have any Morleys in Scotland that might fit in?  It doesn't seem to be a very popular name in Scotland so I'm wondering if the family was there for only a short time.  Many thanks for any clues!  Regards, Lesley

Have you found him on any earlier English census?

Was his marriage to Sarah ??Pascoe a second marriage for him? 1871 image is terrible to read

Did he marry as Murley or Morley

Hi, yes that's him!  I have found no definite match before the 1871 census and have not traced his first marriage either.  I agree the 1871 census is hard to read and wonder if it actually does say Scotland, but it's been consistently transcribed as that so I have to assume it's correct.  He married as Murley but I've tried every variation I can think of to trace him in the other censuses.  Many thanks for your interest and any help you can give.

Although there are Murley children on the 1871 entry - I notice they only married in 1872 she is shown as Plasscow

Stepdaughter Martha's birth was registered as Murley in 1866

Sarah was previously married to Francis Pascoe a stonemason as per 1851 entry and is a widow in 1861.  Francis died aged 39 on 1.7.1859 so some of the stepchildren shown on the 1871 cannot be from Sarah's marriage to Francis

So that means John could have been around somewhere in London in 1861 but parts of the 1861 are missing

Hi yes, that's right, most of the children are John's and this is stated on their birth certificates.

I have enlarged the 1871 as much as I can but I can't make out his occupation or his birthplace and he died before 1881.  I don't think his birthplace is Scotland

There are quite a lot of Cornwall entries for the Murley surname

Thanks for trying!  His occupation is Dock Labourer.
