Hi Tom,

Welcome to RootsChat

Quote from a post by belfordian 26 th April 1913

"When I lived in Morpeth about 1950-70 there was a Children's Home on the left handside of Pottery Bank just past Bullers Green as you go north from the town"

and

" there was three in Morpeth. Hillbrow Assessment and Observation Centre. (To give it its full title) on Bullers Green & Deneview and Overdale at Pottery Bank.

here is the link - worth a read :-

Just prior to the 1970's

Dene View, Overdale and Wansbeck Children's Homes, Morpeth: full inspection  - closed until 1st January 2044 ( 75 years)  Contains sensitive personal information where release would distress or endanger an individual who was a minor at date of file.

If this works, this is a photo of Hillbrow I took last year (I too spent some time within its walls). There were woods behind the building and there was a pretty good tree house. During breaks, we would jog far enough into the woods to be able to light up.

There was a steep road that led up to Dene View, and we would place a traffic cone about half way up and then time each other as we pedalled up, round the cone and then zoomed back down on an old bicycle.

The bait was all right too - egg bread most mornings, and this odd combination called cornflour pudding with chocolate sauce (I loved that). There was Hell on one day when the cook noticed a flapjack missing from a batch she'd baked. We all came under suspicion, but a staff member eventually fessed up to the crime.

They had a blue Commer minibus when I was there.

(Sorry the image is a bit big - my first attempt)

I was in children's home in Morpeth from 1965 - 1977

Children's home - Wansbeck Villa The Stanners Morpeth - lots of memories was very old fashioned home when I went originally, but changed through time.  Well cared for by lovely people.  Not the same as being with your own family though.  Have lots of stories and memories to share.

The other homes on Pottery bank, Hillbrow, Dene View and Overdale

If you want any information please ask

It is the inspection report that has been closed since 1969, not the home.
