Is it possible that this Joseph is the illegitimate child?? That maybe she recorded him and herself as a Whitlan and then married Matthew with Joseph reverting back as a Goodhand in the 1851 census? I know the age is a bit out (Joseph would be 10 in 1841) but that isn't uncommon in the census' especially as early as 1841.

Thats just what we are saying !
They seem to be living together in 1841 but not marrying till 1844

Wow that's marvelous! I guess she didn't want to name him on the baptism record as they weren't married and it was scandelous?

More likely he was not Josephs father, and they didnt get together till after Josephs birth.

Certainly by the time Joseph married himself, he was not under that impression.

A copy of the 1844 marriage cert would be useful to see if either had been married before. If the Amelia on it was a widow, then she may be the one who was nee Drake and previously married to Joseph after all.

Yes I think you're right. But I do now know Amelia's birth year and her father's name which has made me very happy!

The 1844 marriage for Amelia Goodhand is as a spinster with father listed as Charles Goodhand.   If it had been the married Amelia Goodhand her father's name would have been ....Drake.

Thanks everyone! Still no closer to finding out Joseph's father but being able to piece all the other circumstances together has helped immensely!
