are online newspapers available for Scotland?
« on: Monday 07 July 14 10:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Having just discovered through looking at the Welsh newspapers online, my 2xgreat grandfather's sisters moved up to Edinburgh from North Wales possibly around 1900, maybe earlier. But one of the sisters died suddenly aged 41. She was living at 6 Merchiston Mews Edinburgh at the time. Her sister is on the 1901 census living at 3 Sunbury Mews Edinburgh with her family, I can't find them on the 1911 yet. I was just wondering if the newspapers were available online or if any kind person with access could do a look up please. Hannah Williams aged 41 died on April 17 1911, I have no idea if she is buried up there in Edinburgh, probably as I don't think the family would have transported her back to North Wales. I can't find anything in the Welsh newspapers regarding this. Her sister Martha McKinley put notices in the local Welsh newspaper every year in Memorial to her sister.
Kind Regards

Hi,

In the Scotsman of 19 April 1911, an obituary stated that at 3 Merchiston Mews, on the 17th very suddenly, Hannah Williams, sister in law of Thomas McKinley. Funeral was to be on Friday at 2:00pm in Ecclesmachan. A note on the bottom asked Welsh papers to copy this notice.

Hi,

Ecclesmachan Strathbrock Church & Cemetery is in West Lothian district. I have had a look at the index of MI's on Scottish Monumental Inscriptions, and cannot see a Williams name. Maybe if you contact West Lothian Council, they maybe assist with locating her grave.

Hi Tom,
After your information, I checked with the familysearch web site and have managed to find a photo of the grave in Ecclesmachan Cemetery for Hannah Williams, her sister Martha who was second wife to Thomas McKinley, all sharing the same headstone. It confirmed the date of Hannah's death on the stone so I knew it was the right one for me. I can't find a marriage record on Scotlandspeople so maybe Martha and Thomas were married in a Registry Office, so more to look up. Thanks again for your help/
Kind Regards

Registry Office weddings , as we understand them today, did not come into being in Scotland until the 1940's. If there is no record of a marriage on SP it either means that their marriage was outwith Scotland or it was what was termed an "irregular" marriage.

Hi Nerys,

Just incase you hadn't considered the name McKinley may have had variants of Mac/Mc MacGinley/MacGinlay/MacGinly etc. & Williams may have been William, I did a search with Thomas McKinley using "soundex" & left female name blank with "surname beginning with" option for William/Williamson & BINGO!! :-)

This is from the Edinburgh Evening News 19 October 1920

M'Kinley - At St Raphaels House Blackford Avenue on the 19th inst William eldest son of Mr and Mrs T M'Kinley. 6 Merchiston Mews.

And immediately below it

M'Kinley - At St Raphaels  Home, Blackford Avenue on the 19inst William M'Kinley(Billy), dearly loved friend of Belle F Pagan, Hope Cottage, Davidson's Mains.

There is also a death notice for Martha Williams 29th Sept 1832. You can see the snippet on the newspaper archive but when you click to see the image it comes up with missing issue. The snippet says At 6 Merchiston Mews Martha Williams bel..ved M'Kinley. Funeral on Saturday at Ecclesmachan Churchyard.

Could not see a marriage notice.

Hi Annie,
I think I tried all sorts of variants but didn't get anywhere, I even looked for a Welsh marriage but nothing. Thank you so much for your help, it's another step closer in my puzzle  ;D I just wonder why the sisters went all the way up to Scotland, as far as I know we have no family up there.
Best wishes
