Can anyone read this handwriting?
« on: Monday 19 January 09 07:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I've attached a section from my Scottish gr gr gr grandfather's 1861 death certificate - it's the box for the parent's details. I can make out the name "James Robertson" and the mother's name Janet Robertson / Monteath, but can't decipher James's occupation.

Is anyone here good at interpreting 19th century handwriting? Thanks in advance to anyone who can have a go at reading it,

Regards,
Steve Lord

I was looking at occupations on the '41 census and it seems that you were either a farmer, or an agricultural labourer.

The death certificate was for George Robertson husband of Isabella Wark, and he died in Stirling, 5th Mar 1861 :)

Should George be on the 1841 Census in Scotland?

If so, what was his birth year?

Agricultural farmer?
Perhaps the writer meant "arable" farmer as opposed to one raising livestock?
