Dead ends in Hamilton - can anyone help?
« on: Monday 15 December 14 21:55 GMT (UK) »
Working backwards with my family lines in Hamilton through ScotlandsPeople, I've hit some dead ends. I wonder if anyone has encountered any of the people below in bold in their research and can help me work further backward in time.

Thomas Hart (birth unknown, parents unknown)
m. Grizel/Grissel Smith (birth unknown, parents unknown, marriage date & location unknown)

They had the following children in Hamilton:
Thomas (b. 1724)
William (b. 1728)
Jean (b. 1730)
John (b. 1732)
Grissel (b. 1735)
Mary (b. 1739) - married James Hinshaw 1771 in Hamilton

Thomas Weir (birth unknown, parents unknown)
m. Katharine Paterson (birth unknown, parents unknown, marriage date & location unknown)

I only find one child of theirs, born in Hamilton:
Marion Weir, b. 18 Dec. 1708, married James Hinshaw 1733 Hamilton

Robert Hinshaw  (birth unknown, parents unknown)
m. Janet Orr 24 June 1677 in Hamilton (birth unknown, parents unknown)

Again, I find only one child:
Robert Hinshaw, b. 10 Aug 1684 in Hamilton, married Jean Smith of Dalziel in 1709.

I haven't found death/burial records of the individuals in bold either.

Thanks for any help you can offer.
Hinshaw/Watt/Yetts/Hart/Weir/Smith - Lanarkshire
Miller/Wilson/McAllum/Mitchell - Stirlingshire
Robertson/Jack/Anderson - Midlothian

I don't like to be a pessimist, but realistically I think you have got back about as far as you ever will, unless any of your families owned land. It's actually quite an achievement to get back as far as 1700, given the many gaps in the records.

If they did own land, there could be older records in the Registers of Sasines, which start in 1617. These records are held in the National Records of Scotland, but cannot be consulted online. See http://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

I don't have any great expectations... just at the point now of trying all potential avenues before giving up. Thank you for the tip on the Sasines.

You are at the point where it is difficult to confirm connections.

How did you confirm the parents of Mary Hart who married James Hinshaw?

Does her marriage record confirm those parents names?
