Old electoral rolls
« on: Saturday 20 September 14 13:50 BST (UK) »
I am trying to work out when my father's family moved from Lincolnshire to London.  My father and uncle were born in Kirton Lindsey in 1919/1920 and by 1939 the family were living in Balham, South London.  I wonder could I track their movements by trawling through old electoral rolls?  Are they generally available and, if so, how do I get access to them?  Any advice welcome.

Until 1969, you had to be 21 to vote (and appear on the electoral roll), so if your chaps weren't born until 1919/20, they'd be too young in 1939 to appear.  I think - assuming my maths is better than normal!

Some of the registers deposited at the London Metropolitan Archives have been digitised and transcribed and are online with a subscription at Ancestry.

The collection isn't complete though.

Agreed.  But their parents, my grandparents, would be old enough.

What about those in Lincolnshire?

I've had a trawl through the London Archives.  Didn't realise Ancestry had the electoral roll records.  As you say they seem to be incomplete but useful nevertheless. I now know the family were there in 1937 and, because they had a sitting tenant I could trace when she was there but they were not up to 1933.  However there is a gap between those dates.  If I were to go to Lincoln would I be able to see records there?

Thanks for the tip.  I've had a quick look and there may be some mileage in it.
