Guvernor of Calton Goal, John Smith
« on: Thursday 14 November 13 16:30 GMT (UK) »
??? My great, great grandfather John Smith was guvernor of Edinburgh Prison for 35 years and died 06 Nov 1875.
Any hints to where I can trace the abovementioned person. Prison archives, museum ect.

IŽll be thrilled to hear news.

Probably there would be lots of records if you could get to Edinburgh and go to the local archives (e.g. http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/cityarchives ) but for the moment you can look at some of the newspaper records online which mention him:

(you might have to try various searches)

I am the Great Great Grand Neice of John Smith and Margaret Wilson.  I have spent thirty years searching the Smith family as a whole.

I would be interested in knowing where you fit into the family?

Regards
Joy

Hi Leif,
Thanks for the reply, I have just transferred my Family History to a Mac laptop and the GEDcom has taken the spaces from my notes, so will update, and get back to you.

and I will send a couple more posts so as to avail myself of Tom's advise
