William Hill, Langton/Great Glenn
« on: Tuesday 29 July 14 15:07 BST (UK) »
William Hill was my 3xgt grandfather and I'd like to try to find a baptism/birth famly for him. It's been a while since I hit this brick wall - perhaps someone has some new resources etc?

Facts as known so far:

William Hill b 1817ish ;  d 1862 Great Glenn.
Baker/master baker
Censuses and death cert all suggest a yob 1817; censuses say Church Langton as pob.

Married Ann Wright in Great Glenn in Dec 1839. Both "of full age" (Ann was about 7 years older than William). William's father given as John Hill, labourer (not very helpful at all!) Witnesses John Wright and Elizabeth Bown (probably Ann's brother and his fiance).

(Ann's uncle was a baker and her father may also have been. Did William come to Great Glenn as an apprentice to one of them?)

William and Ann's children = Thomas; Ann Elizabeth; Mary Jane; Thomas William; James Wright; Sophia (probably not helpful, no unusual names there to trace through families).

Died November 1862 in Great Glenn, age 46; informant Ebenezer Wright (his brother in law).

Can anyone help me find any trace of William before his marriage to Ann?

Thank you

Have you checked the parish registers for Church Langton and surrounding parishes for a christening for him?

Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

I looked through the PRs briefly at LRO a few years ago but was short of time, and a bit confused by the fact that I couldn't seem to separate out the various Langton villages.

I can't get back to the RO at the moment so wondered if anyone had access to the resources.

Thanks for looking on familysearch -- but this muddies the waters as my William gave his father's name as John!

I've poked around a bit more.

Familysearch has James, Thomas, William and Samuel b to William and Ann Hill in the relevant time period.

in 1841 there's a John Hill , servant to a grazier, age 60, in "West Langton, Church Langton". Next door is a 60 year old Ann Hill with 3 children who from their ages may be her grandchildren. Ann not born in county.

in 1851 there's a 71 yr old John Hill lodging in East Langton with Ann Hill -- 60 yrs old again - and her adult sons Thomas and James (I think this is the family mentioned in para 1). John was Ann's brother in law and "pauper ag lab" from East Langton. Ann was from North Kilworth and probably not the same Ann as in the 1841 census.

I don't know enough about the Langton villages. Did they share a church? Were all baptisms in East, West, Church or even Tur Langton? Lord I'm confused!
