Absent Voter List
« on: Thursday 24 July 14 21:08 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know whether there are any absent voter lists for the Hanley area in 1926/7/8 and if so where are they kept?

Many thanks
Chris

Absent voters lists were mainly issued in 1918 & 1919 due to the numbers of men called up for service in the war.

At other times the status of absent voters was mentioned in the normal electoral role as was other additional information. Examples of what could be mentioned included; jury service qualification, and the date of the birthday for those reaching voting age during the life of the register, between 1885 & 1915, people who qualified on the lodger's franchise.
Cheers

Thanks Guy,
The reason I was asking was that I believe that my paternal grandfather may have been a North Staffordshire miner who possibly went over to Liverpool to build the Mersey Queensway Tunnel. However I have no documentary evidence or indeed any evidence for that matter that I have the right person! I do have an address for the family home so was hoping I could prove or disprove my theory using the electoral registers.
Best wishes
Chris
