Bigsbys of Deptford Greenwich
« on: Sunday 21 December 14 18:01 GMT (UK) »
Hello everyone,
As a newbie to this Forum I hope that this is in the best place for some help. Can anyone help me with any information further back than Abraham Bigsby, my best information says prob b. 1735, although I have a handwritten note (not known who wrote it or when) which says 1740 (although I cannot find a 1740), who married firstly Mary Ritchie and secondly Alice Addison. There are a number of children on this hand written note for Abraham and Mary Ritchie, John 1762 d. 1763, Abraham 1763, Joseph 1765, Marriat  (Merrall or similar spelling) 1767, Sarah 1770, John 1772 d. 1772 , Mary 1773 d. 1777, Elizabeth 1776, John 1778 d. 1778. Abraham's Will of 1785 mentions some of them. The only one of these I can find is John b. 1762 and a John d. 1763. Father is mentioned as a Shipwright. If I follow this 'Shipwright theme' back I can get (starting from 1762) John whose father was Abraham shipwright bap. 1735 as opposed to 1740 from the handwritten note, and his father Abraham bap. 1706/7 Shipwright, and his father John bap. 1764 St Alfage Greenwich whose father was a John/Jon. Each generation's baptism record mentions the father as Shipwright of New Street. The Abraham Bigsby bap 1706/7 had at least 6 brothers and sisters - Sarah, Merall (interesting name repeating itself!!), John, John, Rebecca, and Jos (poss Joseph) all of these baptism records also record the father as Shipwright of New Street!!
So an anyone help me confirm or deny any of this or get me back further?

Best Nick

There appears to be another daughter Susannah & his occupation appears to be common brewer.
He could have been a shipwright as well but it's not stated on his will.
There's a Baptism for Abraham Bigsby 27/7/1735 fa. Abraham shipwright also a Jane Bigsby Bapt. 25/6/1738 both St. Nicholas Deptford.

Yes, thank you for that. I do actually have the Abraham.... he is the one that I concluded may actually be the one that on my hand written note that said 1740.... perhaps? The Jane I have as well and I believe she was married to a William Banks in 1764.
Thanks again,
Nick

From the children mentioned these are the one's still alive in 1785 & probable marriages:
Joseph m. 1786 also a brewer.
Marral m. 1787
Sarah m. 1805
Elizabeth m. 1810
Susannah no info.
I've also found this marriage:
Deptford
Oct. 18. 1734 Abraham Bigsby and Jane Brewers, both of Deptford.
They must be the parents of Abraham b. 1735 & Jane b. 1738.
The note so far looks accurate.
I don't know if you've seen this:

Hi Jim... I'm assuming I may call you that?
That is brilliant..... thank you. I agree that the marriage info certainly suggests that the note is accurate. But what do you think about the note saying 1740 for Abraham's birth and me only being able to find a 1735 Abraham? Can I ask how you are able to find out that those names you give were still alive in 1785? Are you from or living in that area and are able to check records? Are these conversations on this site viewable by anyone or now we are corresponding can only we see these conversations. I would like to send you privately the handwritten note to see if you can shed any further light on other aspects.
The Map is fantastic!! is that the full extent of it? I cannot see New Street? I do however see Butt Lane which is on John bap 1762 entry on Ancestry "deptford high street formally Butt lane". Interesting, though I'm sure unrelated, that there was a mooring? for Capt. Merrell..... it being a name I had never heard of before certainly not as a christian name.
As of tomorrow am I am away for Christmas. If you reply I may not get back to you till the w/e. Happy Christmas.

Nick

PS does the word Marquessate mean you have been here on the site helping people for a long long time?  ;-)

The 1785 names came from Abraham's will.
This is a public forum so anyone logged in can see it.
Now you've made 3 posts you can send personal messages by clicking on the file icon under your name.
I'll send you a pm with an email address to send your note to if you like.
I've been on here doing this for about 10 years & I've made just over 15 1/2 thousand posts.
The map is the full extent as to what I've found so far.

I don't think New St. is on the 1623 maps.It appears to be north near St. Nicholas' Church.
This 1835 map shows the location (yellow) but at this time it was renamed Armada St. which has now also gone.
On a current map it's pretty much where McMillan St. is.
Looking at the Deptford burials there are these;
John Bigsbee shipwright d. May 1743.
Mary Bigsbee widow New St. d. Feb. 1743.
OK an explanation as to why Mary appears to have died before John but is listed as widow.
The Rector was using the Julian calendar where the year starts in April. So Feb. 1743 is actually Feb. 1744 so comes after the death of John.
So they look like the parents of the Bigsby children born around the early 1700's.

The entry is for 1789. she was Baptised at the same time as son Thomas Withers.
I don't know why she was Baptised twice, maybe she didn't know if she was or not.
Address is given as Pound Lane.
Abraham & Jane were married in 1734.
Managed to find New St. (yellow) not exactly where the info said it was.
Also Mill Lane (red).

So if we go back to the 1st. map you can see where it was eventually located.
