Hubert Lake says he is born Jul 1889 in Pimlico, London on the Service Record:

No Hubert Lake's found but there is:

Hubert Sherington Hall - Fulham 1a 299 - Sep 1889 Qtr

Could be worth following up on the 1891 census to see where he is:

Also Irena Blanche Hall - Fulham 1a 298 - Sep 1889 Qtr

Death - Aged 0 - Jun 1890 Qtr Chelsea 1a 220

Thanks. I actually ordered this birth certificate a few days ago. Hopefully it's not another £7 down the drain!!

I will post an update when I receive the certificate. It doesn't tie in with the cornwall story, although he could have been born in London and then taken down to Cornwall as an infant.  :)

Alligator - not sure about Hubert Lake (Fulham) one now as Pimlico is a little way from Fulham.

However there is also this one from Westminster (which would suit Pimlico) in 1887. Apologies if you have already followed this one before:

Dec 1887 Qtr - Westminster 1a 490 - Herbert Hall

Have you had any luck in locating Roland in 1871 & 1891 yet ?

1871  RG10/1595 Newmarket
Harry Hall, 55, artist, b Cambridge
Ellen A Hall, 48, b Newmarket
Kate M Hall, 9, dau, b Newmarket
Roland Hall, 6, son, B Newmarket

...so not looking very encouraging unless Kate M(arion) can become Florrie. There are also at least four more sons in previous censuses

Thanks. That's really interesting, as my grandad mentioned that Herbert told him he grew up in Fulham. The 1881 census has Roland living in Fulham, plus being an artist isn't a particular common occupation.

This is great. I really appreciate everyone's help. I'm going to have a play around with this information and see if this leads anywhere.

It's just tricky with the name changes!!! I'm assuming a person would be unlikely to change their date of birth? Hopefully when I receive the Hubert Sherington certificate and the dob is 18 July 1889, I can pretty much assume it's the same person?!
 :) :)

Hi,

Spent a while looking for him on your other thread.   Was there no address listed on the Naval Records when he joined up?  Or is that a dead end too.

Mo

Hi Mo

Thanks for taking a look. Unfortunately there was no address  .

I decided to take a look at Herbert's father - Claud, and find any Lake's on the 1901 census who had an occupation related to the dairy industry, as apparently he set up his own dairy business. I managed to find a Charles Lake who I think may be his father. The marriage certificate I ordered for Herbert and Louisa was directly from Wandsworth council where they are hand written. It made me think that maybe the person misread the fathers name as Claud, when it was actually Charles. Today I ordered the certificate directly from the GRO - so hopefully that will show a bit of a scribble that could be read as Charles!

Anyway I found a Charles Lake, b 1845 NK London living with his mother whom I'm assuming remarried as her name is Sarah Marsh. Charles occupation is listed as a Dairy Foreman, so I feel quietly confident it could be right.

Only found this out today so having a play around now with the records to try and confirm things    :)

Hi,

By the way, I took a look for 61 Trinity Road in the 1918 London Post Office Directory.  There isn`t a number 61 listed :'(   It has number 59 with a James Uglow and then underneath says "here is Glenburnie Rd" followed by number 77 with a John William Paul, bootmaker.  ( Both good Devon/Cornwall names ;D)

Good luck with the certificate.

Here are a few more bits of information about Herbert Lake from a letter by my Grandad's sister (Herbert's daughter).

If anyone can find any leads from this please let me know  :). I just thought he had a very eventful life and people may find the following just interesting to read!

The old man took charge of his own life and after a series of local jobs he finally ended up working at the old Palladium Theatre - here, a troupe of acrobats became interested in him, because as a result of rickets he was able to contort his body into any position, and they wanted him to be in the act! - he declined!!

Somehow, he seems to have persuaded the Navy to take him on - abandoned ship in Australia and worked his passage back home! Then came the Great War in 1914 - he joined up and fought on the Somme, - he could describe this War with great accuracy, and spoke bitterly of having to use dead bodies, almost as sandbags, and also the carnage that took place amongst the infantry - I've seen tears in his eyes when he spoke of the horrors they went through! Somehow, he was transferred to the armoured corps and it was in the service that he caught a blighty one, - a shell exploded the tank he was in and his mate, beside him, (in Dads words) became just an amount of charred ash, - shrapnel pierced Dad's head and as you may remember the calves of his legs were partly destroyed and his War service was ended! He was taken back to Blighty and his head injuries were assessed - the shrapnel was too close to his brain to be removed and he was advised never to drink alcohol again, (advice, which of course, he blithely ignored!).

There is much more in her letter, but I don't want to go on.  :)

Does anyone else have a soft spot for a particular ancestor? I've really warmed to Herbert and I'm so desperate to trace his family back further.
