York marriage for Henry Herring and Elizabeth Pinder
« on: Monday 20 October 14 19:23 BST (UK) »
Dear Rootschatters,
I am looking into the marriage and background of Elizabeth Pinder.

I have discovered via the IGI that she married Henry Herring at 'York' on 3 October in the year 1781.

I am trying to find in which one of the various churches of York did the event take place.
Is anyone able to help?

I was always under the impression that Elizabeth came from the Leven-Sigglesthorne area, and while I know that she and Henry may have gone to York to be married (much as people went to London from the surrounding countryside) I know that at her death in 1829, mention was made of her family and friends in York as well as in Garton with Grimston, where she died.

I am wondering if the records for the marriage in York will give any clues or if anyone has any other details they could give to shed some light on this shadowy person.

I can tell you that she was born in about 1746 and perhaps was a widow or else married later in life.

Bye for now,

Kirk

Marriage in Leven in Holderness, 3rd October 1781.

Henry Herring, batchelor married Elizabeth Pinder, widow of Garton, in the presence of William North and John Burrell.

William North is a witness on a number of marriages on the same page.

There is a death of a Joshua Pinder on 17 September 1778, age 45. From Grimston Garth, Parish of Garton, York. He could possibly be Elizabeth's first husband :-\

That is very interesting, sgf28, because I always thought that Elizabeth was a widow.  Henry Herring/Heron was supposedly a very handsome man and much younger than Elizabeth when they married.    ;)

It is interesting that this Joshua Pindar died as Grimston Garth because that is where Henry and Elizabeth lived after they married, and I wonder if the tenancy belonged to Elizabeth.

Is there a record of Joshua being married to anyone called Elizabeth?

This is very exciting news, thank you!

There are two references to a letter / letters from Joshua Pindar of Grimston in ERY archives, in the collection of John Grimston's correspondence (ref. DDGR/42/15, 1765, and DDGR/42/17, 1767). See East Riding Council website, archives, online catalogue.  They probably concern landholding, but may mention family.

You should also look at Hull History Centre's online catalogue, where there is more detailed information - search for Pinder (rather than Pindar) Grimston.
All the best
