James and Barbara were married in Kirkwall 30/11/1820, they had 7 children: David born 1825, David Pitcairn born 1830, James 1833, Jane 1838, Margaret 1828, William 1826 and William again in 1835, the first William must have died, the first David must also have died so they named the second one David Pitcairn? ( these births are all on Scotlands People ) looks like Barbara is still alive on the 1871 census at Brake/Breck in Rendall, but I have found another James Sabiston married to Barbara Craigie from Rousay who are both a similar age to your James and Barbara, and living in the same general area so easy to get them mixed up on the census info ::)
Dumfriesshire: Bell, Kerr, Dickson, Hetherington
Orkney: Cursiter, Peace, Drever, Cooper, Paterson, Brock, Leslie, Malcomson, Miller, Scott
Cumberland: Charlton, Young

Hi,

Did David Sabiston move to the North of England prior to his emigration?
I have found a David Sabiston living at Bedlington, Northumberland in both 1861 and 1871 England Census.

1871
David Sabiston  aged 40 born Scotland
Isabella Sabiston aged 10 born Bedlington, Northhumberland
David Sabiston aged 7      born    "                      "
Mary Sabiston aged 3       born    "                      "

Info on 1861 on www.familysearch.org does not give other family members in the houshold
David  aged 30  no birthplace recorded
But there is a Jane Sabiston aged 32 no birthplace recorded in Bedlington (his wife?).
And three girls : Elizabeth aged 7 birthplace unrecorded
                        Jane    aged 2  birthplace Bedlington
                        Isabella aged 0 birthplace     "
Looks like a family! And it looks as if Jane is gone by 1871?

No occupations are given on the website but I've been to that area of Northumberland and have driven through Bedlington and I think coal was a huge industry there. So this David was probably a miner??

Maybe you have this info already...and maybe it's not your David....apologies if that is the case.

Looby

1871 has David as Married but occp is hard to read (brakeman).
1861 David is born c  1831 Orkney Island and Jane (Wife) c 1829 Orkney Island , Davids occp is Stoker to a Colliery Engine.
Ist Child Elizabeth is born Orkney 1854

Marriage from Familysearch.Org;
David SABISTON
Jane HOWRIE
20 July 1852, Evie and Rendall, Orkney, Scotland

Marriage can be checked on Scotlandspeople.

Trish :)

EDIT Jane Sabiston born c 1829 Island, Orkney, Married, Enginemans Wife, is a Patient in a Hospital in Northumberland.

I had to go back 12 pages to find she is in the Northumberland County Lunatic Asylum.
Address, Esat Cottingwood, Morpeth

She may not be a Luntic (as she is described) maybe just had a breakdown after Childbirth or a Childs Death.

Children;
ELIZABETH 1854 Orkney
JANE 1859 Bedlington, Northumberland
DAVID 1864 Bedlington
MARY 1866 Bedlington

DAVID Snr disappears from Census after the 1871 (gone to NZ?) but JANE appears in 1881 as a Charwoman, down as Mar, with DAVID 1864 and MARY B 1868
(you can see this on Familysearch.Org)

Mary seems to have her Birth Reg June 1867 Morpeth as Mary Brown Sabiston (this fits with info found earlier)

NZ BMD has a Death Reg for a David Sabiston age 60 in 1889
ISABELLA 1860 Bedlington

Trish :)

Wow, Thanks Trish and looby.
Looby, That is my David and some of it I had and some I didn't but every little bit helps :)
Trish, lots of bits there, Yes David came to New Zealand about 1874 (with another wife). I found that marriage. Elizabeth Cook in 1873. They had one son here in New Zealand, William, and it is him that my husband is related too.

Thanks again,
Kim

Just an interesting postnote to David Pitcairn Sabiston's story.
I thought it strange that both he and a brother of Jane Hourie's shared the same middle name Pitcairn. Keying Pitcairn into the forenames on Familysearch threw up a good dozen David Pitcairn's being born to various couples in the 1830's in Evie and Rendall district with the odd Jane/Isabella/Thomas etc.
Turns out the Minister of Evie and Rendall during the 1830's and early 1840's was a Rev David Pitcairn (1788 -1870 born in Edinburgh). He must have been a fine and popular man for his parishioners to call their children after him :D.... or maybe the devout locals were keeping on the right side of him!!
