Barry Family
« on: Monday 30 January 12 01:00 GMT (UK) »
My gg grand father ( Richard James Barry) was born in Ballydehob, Schull/Skull in SW Cork abt 1840.  R.J.'s  parents were David Barry and Sarah Roberts. I believe he had 3 sisters and 1 brother that I know off, Mary 1838, Julia 1842, Margaret 1844 and David 1846.

David may have been born around 1815 and married Sarah 1836. Sarah may have been born abt 1810. Both in Schull/Skull

R.J. migrated to Australia sometime in the 1860's.

I would be interested to know if any Barry's, or descendants still live in the area. Or alternatively what happened.

These are all my previous threads.

At  the time the only evidence I could find on  a David Barry and Sarah Barry was Lancashire England and Richard James Barry London/Middlesex.

Records from Schull/Skull appeared on the net after those threads were forwarded to rootschat.com. Please disregard my threads relating to England.

The phonebook (www.eircomphonebook.ie) lists some Barrys in Ballydehob. Make sure to click Residential at top right. You could try writing some letters. I don't really think Barry is a hugely common surname this far west in Cork.

Thank you for that info.

There are 8 people listed with the surname of Barry. All appear at different addresses. I'am not sure how big Ballydehob is so I can't say if that a lot or not.

I'll write some letters as you suggest and see how I go.

Regards
Colin

Ballydehob village is essentially one street with bits off to the side but there would be a rural area around it as well. Google Steetview would give you an idea. It is possible/probable that some of the Barrys listed in the phonebook are related to each other.

Hi Colin,
Im new to the world of genealogy and am finding it quite fascinating. Ive been given some basic info via my Aunt about the Barry family from a Kevin Barry ( '64) . Im the great great grandaughter of your Richard Barry. My grandfather was also Richard James Barry born Toowoomba. Id be fascinated to share info.
I have only the basics about the Barry Roberts Murphy Traynor Grandparents of your Richards children. Would love to see birth and marriage certificates
Our family is "littered' with Richards James Kevins and Davids and even Barrys as a first name
Suzy

Hi Suzy.

Thanks for the contact. My grandfather was James David Henry Barry, brother to your grandfather.

I had a brother named Kevin, born 1959, died 2010.
