Bentley's, Shere
« on: Wednesday 11 June 14 19:59 BST (UK) »
In 1916 a marriage took place between Jane Proudley and Harry Chapman.  Both signed with a X.  The address for both was given as 'Bentley's, Shere'.  I have been unable to trace where this is and, unfortunately, do not have any local knowledge of the area.

Does anybody have any ideas?  Thank you in advance.

I had found Bentley Copse but it seems strange not to give the full name on the certificate - I have checked the Surrey parish registers and there are only 2 marriages with this exact address.

Hi again, I must admit I thought it a bit odd, I only knew of the possibility of Bentley's Copse due to the fact I camped there many years ago!

What was the occupation of the Groom?

You can just make out "Bentley Cottages" - possibility? Hurtwood is just south of Shere.

They could have lived at what was "Bentlys Cottages" in Hound House Road, Shere next door to what is now the Bentley Copse Scout Camp.  I believe these two cottages were sold in 1919 and previous to that belonged to Hazel Hall in Peaslake.  They would have been tenanted by either their various farm employees or local labourers.  These two cottages were amalgamated over the years and now form part of a large house where I live.  Hope that might help!
