Alexander Fleming, Inverkeithing
« on: Sunday 18 May 14 13:40 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to get birth details for Alexander Fleming (parents John Fleming and Graham White married 14/11/1803 at Canongate). FamilySearch site has a birth for Alexander Fliman at Inverkeithing, Fife, 16/06/1821 but I cannot find a record of this on ScotlandsPeople site.

Also looking for info on his parents birth/death etc. John Fleming died 1855 at Inverkeithing.

Thanks, J

Hi J

If Alexander's father John died in 1855, have you viewed his death cert on  www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk For the first year of official registration in Scotland, BMDs ran over two pages of the register with a lot of unique info. This cert should include also John Fleming's parents details.

From his parents' Canongate marriage in 1803, you also have Graham's father showing as John White https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XT1K-2XZ

Do you know when Graham White died? If after 1855, her death cert would hopefully let you confirm her parents' details.

Have you found the family in the early years on the censuses?

The spellings of names can vary can't they.

Apart from Alexander's entry https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XB1G-TXC, there is also a possible sibling, Robert https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XB12-1QS. A further entry here, no mother's name, https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XYV5-XH6 but this looks to be a death or burial entry.

Hi Monica

I've seen the records you have mentioned, but where do family search get their data? Why can't I find Alexander's birth on ScotlandsPeople?

Graham White is listed on the 1841 census but she is recorded as being deceased on her husband John Fleming's death cert in 1855.

Thanks for your info, J

J, how odd  :-\ Nothing at all shows on SP, no matter what wildcards you use. The indexes on Family Search come from original film from the registers, the same registers imaged and available to view as index and image on SP. Errors can creep in when indexing and things left off, but odd that SP seem to have neither of the two likely births of Alexander and Robert.

You could send them an email. They might not be able to find them, but may have an explanation for you. They have some standard help notes such as www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/FAQs/Questions/index.aspx?201 but can't see anything that fits your query. Try emailing them via this link www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/content/contactus/form.aspx?issue=10
