OWEN family, from Tue Brook Villa, asylum
« on: Sunday 04 December 11 03:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello.

Any assistance on the following will be greatly appreciated, as I am unfamilar with research in Lancashire.

My ancestor Richard James Owen was born 31 May 1860 West Derby and christened 28 Sep 1862 at St Paul Liverpool. His Parents James Owen ( son of John) & Clara Ann Middleton ( dau of Peter Middleton) were married 4 Oct  1853 Shandon Cork, Ireland.

The marriage record itself I find confusing as the only electoral record Ive found in 1861 which matches this family in Everton, says the whole family born Liverpool. Was it common for the English to go to Ireland to marry?

Richard at some stage imigrated to New Zealand by 1890 when he married here. I am unclear if James and Clara went also, some records back this and some dont. However I found a Newspaper article which may or may not be a lead.

Deaths. Auckland Star, Volume XXIX, Issue 234, 4 October 1898, Page 8 OWEN.-At the residence of his daughter Mrs J. F. Smyth, Mary-street, Mt. Eden, James Owen; aged 69 years; son of John Owen, Esq., of Tue Brook Villa, Liverpool.-Liverpool and Melbourne papers please copy. By request no mourning will be worn.

( Richard James Owen died the same year 1898 aged about 38)

Hence trying to find any information on the Owens that ran Tue Brook Villa

Many Thanks
Del

1881 West Derby Lancashire

Green Lane
Tue Brook Villa Asylum
Harold Owen age 58 Physcician and surgeon proprietor born Liverpool
Julia Ann wife age 55 Sedgeley Staff
John Blackie Owen son age 33 Liverpool
Ester Louisa Owen dau age 28 Rainhill
Rich. F Owen son age 27 St Austle Cornwall
Walter H Owen son age 21 Sanbach Cheshire

1861

James Owen age 51 Engineer
Clara A wife age 25
Edith dau age 2
Richard son age 10 months

If they married 1853 Clara would have been only 17 and James 43  James an engineer may have had employment in Ireland with the age difference that may be a reason for an Irish wedding also ??

Hi Pam,

Thanks for that, I hadnt even thought of him working in Ireland. I have also seen records for John Owen at the Green lane address, but earlier than 1881.

Did you notice the places of birth on the census records, did I read correctly when I looked at it as they were all born in Liverpool?

Im sure on one of the christenening  records  for "Richard James Owen" I found said 1862 he was a corn dealer, yet on the marriage cert of Richard James he is also an Engineer.

Cheers

Hi Pam,

The 1841 census looks likley, The James from the 1841 census will the one for the death notice in New Zealand I found the age is perfect. He would have born later than the James I was looking for, if I compare it to the 1861 census return.

Guess I cant rule it out just yet..

Cheers

John from Auckland here.
I'm on the Vestry of St. Jude's Anglican Church, in Avondale, West Auckland.
Since 2008, I've been transcribing and photographing the 1-acre cemetery
which is run by our church.

We have James OWEN - 1898, aged 69,  also infant daughter Florence, d. 1875.
Have located Richard James OWEN, d. 1898, aged 38 - in Purewa Cemetery, E. Auckland.

James and Florence have turned up in the 'NZ Herald' newspaper this week, due
to the rediscovery of Florence's original headstone from 1875, under a house in
Mt. Albert - some 7Km away.
The headstone has been returned to the Avondale Cemetery in the last week.
This is all free - no strings attached.

Normally, we have some 50Mb of cemetery info on our church website, which is
unfortunately down this month.
The webmaster has just moved house and is dealing with 10 years of stuff from
a previous house . . .    I'm taking this opportunity to update files from 2008-10
and everything should be back in a month or two  (all free as well)
