Who were the witnesses at their respective marriages?
It is not unusual for siblings to witness each others marriages.

In my experience it is a myth that "people did not travel far" !

I think this is just a case of basic research - ie going through the parish records for the correct era, for parishes within the area where they said they were born. Hopefully that will reveal their christenings, or at least begin to get a picture of what Sheffield couples were christening children in the area.

If Buckinghamshire PRs are not all online, and you are unable to get to the relelvant record office, then you may ne able to contact the Record Office to see if they do searches for you - there will no doubt be a fee involved!

Well prior to the railways in the 1800's peoplif e would not have travelled far. So if they are linked then i guess you need to know if the original family are from Watford or Newport. Or if they are actually unconnected.

Regarding not travelling far I agree with lizdb, quite a number of my ancestors travelled the length and breadth of Essex, an ancestor came from Nun Monkton in Yorkshire to Gt Waltham in Essex, another from Norfolk to Essex, all pre 1800s.

Regards.
Concentrating currently on:
Essex: Card, Harris, Stowell, Theobald/Tibbles & Turner.
Norfolk: Beale, Cork & Dalton.
Yorkshire: Oswald Sturdy birth/baptism c1708, Oswald where the devil are you?

Elizabeth/Elisabeth Sheffield born approx 1792 and died 13 August 1862 in Newport Pagnell, married a John Tandy (1789-1890) in Sherington in December 1811.

In October 1811, also in Sherington - a Thomas Sheffield (possibly born about 1791) married an Elizabeth Pilgrim.

The Milton Keynes Heritage Association (MKHA) website http://www.mkheritage.co.uk/ has links to historical societies in a number of the villages in the area where they have transcribed records and I looked for Sheffields or Tandys on the Sherington site.

This tells me that John Tandy of Newport Pagnell married Elisabeth Sheffield 10
Dec. 1811, the witnesses being Phillip Tandy and Edward Caporn, and Thomas Sheffield married Elizabeth Pilgrim 14 Oct.1811, the witnesses being Matthew Winnright and Mary Joyce. Both marriages were by banns.

An Elizabeth Sheffield aged 24 was buried at Sherington 17th November 1815, which looks like it is probably Thomas' wife.

There don't appear to be any other Sheffield events in Sherington in the period the data covers which suggests the Sheffields weren't local to the village.

There used to be a shop in Newport "A. Tandy - Tailor" - it would be worth looking at the Newport Pagnell Historical Society pages from the MKHA website and contacting them to see if they can tell you anything about John Tandy and his wife Elisabeth (nee Sheffield).

Before the building of the by-pass Sherington (now a quiet backwater of Milton Keynes) was on the road from Newport through Emberton and Olney to Wellingborough, a busy route.

The railway came to both Olney and Newport - two different lines - but this is after we have these Sheffields marrying in Sherington.

I believe they were born in Newport Pagnell - although - in the census records it varies between Sherington and/or Newport Pagnell.

What is Thomas' occupation from the census?

Did Elizabeth's husband Mr Tandy leave a will? That might give some information about wider family members.

This may be a total red herring but I've just noticed on FREEREG that there is a marriage in 1782 at Earls Barton in Northamptonshire of a Joseph SHARMAN to a Mary SHEFFIELD.

You could take the road from Newport through Sherington and Olney to Bozeat, then take the left turn to Grendon and Earls Barton, or go via Yardley Hastings and Castle Ashby from Olney to get to Earls Barton. About 20 miles by road nowadays but on foot I'd expect it to be less distance and people did move for employment as ag labs.
