Milne

Have a marriage of John Alexander Kelman Milne to Margaret Hutchison in1870 in Crimmond ,Aberdeen. John was born 1846 in Fergus, Banff. Parents were George Milne & Isabella Kelman. Don't believe parents ever got married but was wondering if anyone studying Milne name could tell me if John A.K.Milne had any other siblings and if known ,how he ended up with father instead of mother.Thanks.

A couple of thoughts:

How do you know John ended up with his father rather than mother? (What is the source of this information and dates if known?) Perhaps his mother died? :-\

Have you checked Scotland's People for deaths for Isabella, and births for children with parents George Milne and Isabella Kelman?

Hi all ,

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XB3R-HBK

As Ruskie notes , the wording of the original record on SP may give you a clue on the marital status of the parents.

Think John A K Milne age 5 is with his grandparents(Kelman) on the 1851 Census(freeCEN).

Found this likely reference to Isabella Kelman -
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XB3R-SZQ

On the 1861 Census(freeCEN transcription) John & Mary Kelman have a grandson with them John G Kelman age 15 apprentice shoemaker.
Could that be John A K Milne ?

Think this is son John's entry for 1846 https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XB3R-HBJ

I would guess someone has viewed original and confirmed the birth was illegitimate from that?

Everyone else seems to be finding the information you want, but you might like to note that although St Fergus (not just Fergus) is a parish belonging to Banffshire, it actually lies well away from the rest of the county, next door to the parish of Crimond in Aberdeenshire. See http://www.abdnet.co.uk/genuki/BAN/

If John was illegitimate, as seems likely, there may be some reference to his birth in the Kirk Session minutes of St Fergus and, as it seems that his father might have lived in Crimond, in the KS minutes of Crimond. These documents, if they have survived, should be in the National Archives Records of Scotland, and can be found by searching the http://www.nas.gov.uk/onlineCatalogue/ with reference starting CH2/ .

However they cannot be viewed online. You have to visit either the NAS in Edinburgh, or one of the local archives in Scotland that has a link to the NAS system.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

From this member submitted info here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.2.1/33M5-FRL Isabella may have gone on to marry a William Brown (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XTNR-RX9). This can all be confirmed by certificates etc on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/

Possible 1861 census entry for Isabella mother:

William Brown 33 Ploughman Farmer Labourer, Rathen, Aberdeenshire
Isabella Brown 37 b. St Fergus, Banffshire
Mary Brown 12
Elizabeth Brown 10
Thomas Brown 8
William Brown 6
George Brown 5 Months

Address: Manse Gate, St Fergus Banff

Siblings for John AK Milne likely to have been half siblings if both parents went on to marry after his birth. What if anything shows for John's father George Milne on either his marriage or death certificates?

Good find, Monica, but first it is necessary to prove the identity of John A K Milne's mother before we can be sure that the one who married William Brown is the same Isabella Kelman.

Thanks all for the quick reply's. Had viewed BC on SP but could not find any MC pertaining to both parents, so thought child illigitimate. As for thinking that John was brought up by father, this conclusion(wrongly) because couldn't find him in census under Milne name. Also had came across Kelman/Brown marriage but because no link in census to John had disregarded this. Have only now found the link from John to Brown family. John had a son whom he named George Brown Milne born in Peterhead in 1873. But as you have mentioned it would appear John was being brought up by grandparents. Thanks again for the help, it's cleared a few loose ends up.

Rob.
