did you get a copy of your mums birth certificate?

It was normal if your parents died you went to live with other relatives and brought up as theirs, no questions ask.

Thank you Rathmore I have mum's birth certificate and recently obtained a copy of my grandmother's will in which she said she left everything  to her sister in trust for her two daughters. It was only written a couple of days before she died. She was too weak to sign her name.

Hi Rathmore,

That is the correct cwgc entry but it is inaccurate. John was the son of Patrick and Kate Reid.

It is clear from  Lucy's will that she certainly received an allowance for her daughters and I presume for herself too. I have looked at pension records at Kew and although I have not found my grandmothers records (not all still exist) I have seen other merchant seaman's widows and orphans records. The pension was enough to ensure my mum and her older sister receive a good education. My mother was kept at school until she was 18.

Hi Rathmore,

Haven't written to Cunard, but know the ship was involved in troop carrying from America. Did not have soldiers on board at time of sinking. There were seven lifeboats only one didn't make it.  Have seen crew list and report into sinking at the NA.

Thank you for link to memorial haven't seen that before.
