Help with burial memorial
« on: Friday 13 June 14 20:01 BST (UK) »
Is there someone with a good pair of eyes and an understanding of the Welsh language who could help translate the attached gravestone.  Your help would be gratefully appreciated.

Sorry the writing isn't particularly clear on the photo, but as far as I can make out I can help with some of the inscription.

I think the The Top column says:

Cymrodor
Trelynydd
Merewether
OEDRAN ?79

Dan ..... a Hunodd
BARDD A LLENOR RHAGORAF
CYFIAWAN YW EI COFIO WNAF
FRAWD MYNAF DIANAF

CYFODWYD Y COLOFN HON GAN
CYMDEITHAS Y CYMRODORION

NEWCASTLE A'R CYLCH A'I CYFEILLION
MAY ? 1927
THIS MOR .....

Left hand stone relating to John morgan "Trelynydd"

JOHN MORGAN
"Y BARDD"
Died 14th May 1926
Aged 78 Years

LOVED AND HONOURED

AR DERFYN Y DAITH
NES OLL Y WYN HUN
AETH .... GWAITH
CAN HENAINT WYT FLIN
OND ETO CAF DDEFFRO YN
IEUANC FY NGWEDD
PAN DDEFFROA LLAIS TYNER
FY MHRYNWR O'R BEDD

John Morgan was a bard and a literary man and had been a member of the Cymdeithas y Cymrodorion (a Welsh Fellowship Society) of Newcastle Merewether, who along with John's friends erected the top column in May 1928.

Hi Sam
Thank you so much for your help, the details are very appreciated.  My eyes are not what they use to be and even with glasses I struggle on times.  Rootschatters are a wonderful bunch and once again have come to the fore.  Best wishes
Roy

The gist of the 1st verse is that that he was an excellent bard and literary man of the highest calibre and that he is worthy of commemoration and the writer wishes the "brother" no hurt.

The second verse basically gives the idea that at the end of the journey, rest is nearer, the song of ageing is weary, yet he will wake again and be young in appearance once more when he hears the voice of his saviour from his grave ................... or words to that effect

Thanks Sam
It is nice to have the translation.  I made an attempt on the piece from the newspaper via Google translator but it was  not complete.

Married:-May 14th in Caersalem, (this would be the chapel) Bargoed by the Rev, J Parrish of that place, in the presence of the registrar John Morgan (Trelynydd), Bargoed, and Miss Margaret Jones, previously from Llanwrtyd

May they have a long painless life
And their efforts be crowned by virtue
And their goodness returned with blessings
And be made happy by God the host

Sam
Thanks once again; I have used the Welsh newspapers on line but as I'm not Welsh speaking I can only look-up the English papers.  As an ardent Welshman, it's possible John Morgan's name is mentioned more in the Welsh printed papers.  I have located many articles where he is mentioned on the other side of the pond in the Australian archived newspapers site 'Trove'.
Regards, Roy
