Berrow knowledge please
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 08:11 BST (UK) »
 ???

Hello. Have posted this on the Gloucestershire board as well but seems this is where it should be!

My ancestors on the 1911 census are shown to be living in Whiting Road, Berrow, Tewkesbury.  I am wondering what school the girls would have been likely to attend... I'm hoping this will give me a clue as to where they went from Berrow and what year they moved.  Worcestershire Archives tell me they have administrative records for Berrow schools but not pupil records and that it may be a good idea to contact the school now ... Some schools do keep old records apparently.  It's worth a shot .... If I knew which school they would have attended living in Whiting Road.

Only a person with local knowledge would know ... So here's hoping !

Many thanks

Hi
Not local, but a keen map watcher.
There is currently a Whiting Hill Lane which runs from the village to the NW. See Google maps. Could be that there has been a road name change somewhere in the area.
The building at the junction where it starts is shown on old maps as the village school, just off the road there is St Faiths Church.
It would seem from the proximity that this would have been a church school so I wonder if the church would have the school records, there is a contact number and email link here  http://www.achurchnearyou.com/berrow-st-faith/
At that time I suspect that local schools covered all ages unless pupils passed for Grammar Schools in which case Tewksbury (Glos) at 7-8 mls is nearer than Ledbury (Worcs) at 10-11mls.
Tewksbury had Boys and Girls Grammars, not sure about Ledbury.

Hope this gives you some ideas

Hi Sophie, Whiting Road is now known as Whiting Hill Lane.  All children from Berrow attended the local school in the neighbouring village of Pendock.  Hope this helps.
