The title says it all: why can't I find the marriage of George Bowden and Ruth [Jarvis] in c.1880?

I suspect it took place in Sheffield where they lived from 1881 onwards, but I could easily be wrong.

George Bowden was born in Stadhampton, Oxon, in 1860.

Ruth was born in Ilkeston, Derbys, in 1864. Jarvis is my best guess to her surname, but I could equally be barking up the wrong tree here.

In the 1911 census their marriage is recorded as having lasted for 31 years i.e. from c.1879-80.

I suspect the marriage is recorded with some creative misspellings of their names. But where?

If you are unsure about Ruth´s name what makes you think it may be Jarvis?

A birth cert for one of their children would give you Ruths maiden name, then you can bark up the right tree.

Are you guessing at Jarvis because they have boarders in the house in 1881 called Jarvis?

1871 has Ruth Jervis/Jarvis with a father Edward which fits with 1881.

However

I was writing a reply but someone beat me to it.

Yes, it was a wild guess based on the lodgers in 1881 (RG11/4668/96/44) and a couple with the same name with a child Ruth in the earlier census. Looking at the ages of some of the lodging couple's presumed children I'm less confident now... I was also passed a scrap of someone else's research which had her as Ruth Jarvis, but I don't know whether that was based on any evidence or the same wild guess as mine.

I can't find any Bo[wl]d[eo]n[g?] marriage that seems to match, Jarvis or no.

You're right, of course, a birth cert would help greatly.

Birth record gives her as Ruth Jervis, but I cannot find a marriage under either Jarvis or Jervis. This is why I am wondering what makes pstainthorp think that we should be looking for Ruth Jarvis rather than some other Ruth.

Nearest marriage I can see ( but would mean lots of mistranscriptions!) Oct/Nov/Dec 1879 Sheffield has a Ruth Jervis and George Holden on same page.
