Emily Street, Keighley
« on: Saturday 26 July 14 17:32 BST (UK) »
I have just found out through my research that one of my ancestors lived on Emily Street, Keighley in 1911.

I'd love to find out what that area looked like at the time.

Are there any good online resources?

Thanks.

Hi,

You might get some help here:

http://keighleyhistory.proboards.com/      or      http://www.valendale.myby.co.uk/old-photos.html

or perhaps contact Keighley Library.

Well, I have just phoned Keighley library and wish I hadn't bothered!  The first time the answer machine was on so I couldn't speak to anyone.

The guy who answered the phone was so rude and couldn't get me off the phone quick enough and said he had to ring off now.  He did however answer my question though.

They do have maps covering the time I am interested in.  I will have a look next time I'm down there.

Not good .......perhaps the local/county archives would be more helpful.

Hi Gibby

Have you tried searching on the West Yorkshire Archives on line catalogue? It includes all holdings in Keighley Library.  I too have had experience of speaking to the individual you mention who is actually a "casual" with little knowledge of the holdings, but if you give him the actual "BK" reference he can get things out for you. (The Keighley holdings are prefixed with BK before the reference number).

There is a small book called Keighley in Old Photographs in the reference library. I think it could be one of Ian Dewhirst's pubilications. Happy hunting

I was sent a map of the area so I now know that there hasn't been much change apart from the addition of the mosque.

He did say he had the map I was interested in and would go through it with me.

I wanted to add something to the conversation and that is when he said he had to ring off now.  I think I know who it was; I don't think he is a casual worker in the library.
