Venlaw House (as it was known in the 1820s) was situated on the site of "Smithfield Castle"

Its been known as "Venlaw Castle" for as long as I can remember.

Venlaw is (arguably) where the good folks of Peebles burned witches in the 1600s.

"The castle is 10 minutes very pleasant walk from the A703 - easiest way from the town is the entrance just opposite the Honda garage - just past the bus station."

More like 200 metres - although slightly uphill!
