History of St Margaret's?
« on: Tuesday 14 October 14 20:28 BST (UK) »
A month or so ago, I stumbled upon a website that had details of life in the Parish of St Margaret's in the 1800s.  It included references to bad sanitation, poverty, violence, and said the parish was the worst place to live in the city at the time. For some reason I didn't bookmark it, and now I cannot find it again.  Does anyone know which website I am referring to and what the address might be?

Actually - it is! :-D  but not that page, that was the one I kept getting.  Having thought again that you were right,  I just tried googling St Margaret's sanitation and found the right page http://www.british-history.ac.uk/report.aspx?compid=66566.  So thanks for giving me the extra nudge!

I'll read that when I have some time, but I have just finished reading a book called The Slums of Leicester which was fascinating.  I dont think I appreciated how bad it was, and in real time, it wasnt actually that long ago.

My gt grannie lived in the slums as a girl and there was a photo of her street in the book.  I could have cried for how bad it was.
Leicestershire -Morley

It is hard to believe how bad things were back then.  My gt gt grandfather lived in St Margarets, it is said it was the worst place in Leicester to live in terms of housing, disease, poverty, etc.  His aunt was in the workhouse.  He did well though, rose above it and ended up very comfortably off.
I have that book in my Amazon basket, seeing what you have said about it has made my mind up over whether to get it - I will now :)  Thanks.
