Annie BELSHAW, Sutton-in-Ashfield, Convicted of Manslaughter
« on: Monday 27 October 14 13:49 GMT (UK) »
Hello, y'all.

I am looking for information on Annie Belshaw (nee?) of Idlewells, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

What I've been able to find:

From The British Journal of Nursing Supplement, 4, August 1917...

Annie was a midwife, but was 'struck off the roll' and had her 'certificate cancelled' because she had performed an abortion which resulted in the death of a woman. She was sentenced to three years in prison.

From a couple of Notts newspapers...

In 1939, she was sentenced to seven years for manslaughter for performing an abortion which resulted in a death. Her age in 1939 is either 57 or 69. She was a widow, and was a shopkeeper at 16 Idlewells.

Ancestry gives me two possible Annies. ???

I would love to know more about her life and what happened to her after prison.

Can anybody point me to anything I could maybe find online? (I'm in the US.)

Thanks! :)

I was wondering about that death - this might be the same person on the 1901 census. 32 Duke St, Sutton in Ashfield

Annie Belshaw    29 - married, b Cothall Wood, Staffordshire. Sewing machinist working at home
Annie E Belshaw  7 - b Nailsworth, Gloucestershire
Nellie Belshaw    5   - b Nailsworth, Gloucestershire
Catherine E Belshaw    2   - b Nailsworth, Gloucestershire
Cyril W M Belshaw    2/12  - b Sutton in Ashfield

Ref RG13, piece 3138, folio 72, page 4.

Think this is the right family as there is a WWI record on Ancestry of a William Clarke, whose next of kin was his wife Catherine Edith, nee Belshaw, of 16 Idlewells, Sutton in Ashfield

and on son Cyril William Maxwell Belshaw's military records he gives home address as 16 Idlewells and mother as Annie Belshaw

This looks like a possible marriage - the Stroud registration district covers Nailsworth and the other pairing are definitely together in 1891

Q2 1894  Stroud    6a   590
Belshaw    Thomas   <<<
Brinkworth    William
Charington    Annie       <<<
Kemp    Minnie Clara

There's also a marriage for an Eliza Belshaw in Stroud in 1892, and a death of a Maria Belshaw b c1841 in Stroud in 1893. This is pointing to a family with strong conenctions to this family - here in Mansfield in 1881 and in Kirkby in Ashfield in 1891

Thomas Belshaw    41
Maria Belshaw    40  <<<
Rebeccar Belshaw    19
John Belshaw    17
George Belshaw    15
Thomas Belshaw  12   <<<
Eliza Belshaw    6 <<<

the problem is that Thomas D Belshaw (as he is on 1891) has a different wife in 1901 and 1911, and in 1901 is only a couple of doors away from Annie!
