Hi

I thought it may refer to the Royal Irish Constabulary but also thought it may have had a religious connection. I had a quick look at the 1901 census hoping to see his occupation but couldn't find him. I'll try & attach a scan of the occupation as written in the burial register:
Dalton: Wexford Town/Ireland
Curran: Ballyvaloo/Blackwater/Co Wexford/Ireland
Clowery/Farrell: Wexford Town/Ireland
Flood: Enniscorthy & Wexford/Ireland
Ormand/Kirwan: Blackwater/Co Wexford/Ireland
Shortman: Bristol/Westbury-on-Trym/Manchester
Trull: Uley/Dursley/Glos
Cross: Dursley/Glos
Hazard: Bristol/Manchester

But is it a 'U'? I thought looked more like a 'C' in census - could it be something like 'Cn' for captain?

Added- Co? not Cn? see next post

Looks like "County Insp R.I.C" on the 1901 scan.

Dara.

Edit: Does the 1911 scan read "CI R.I.C" http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai003623129/

Thanks for clearing up that little mystery

Looking at the following site -  http://www.royalirishconstabulary.com/index6.html -  there is a reference to an individual with the rank of 'County Inspector' and this is possibly the Occupation as stated in the 1901 census - the word 'inspector' having been shortened.

This means that the burial register could be stating C I RIC.
Dalton: Wexford Town/Ireland
Curran: Ballyvaloo/Blackwater/Co Wexford/Ireland
Clowery/Farrell: Wexford Town/Ireland
Flood: Enniscorthy & Wexford/Ireland
Ormand/Kirwan: Blackwater/Co Wexford/Ireland
Shortman: Bristol/Westbury-on-Trym/Manchester
Trull: Uley/Dursley/Glos
Cross: Dursley/Glos
Hazard: Bristol/Manchester
