Petrus "Pierre" NOPPE - Massachusetts Area from 1909
« on: Saturday 20 September 14 02:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out what happened to my wife's Great GrandUncle Petrus "Pierre" NOPPE who was born in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium 08/04/1887, and emigrated to Boston, Massachusetts in 1909 on the Cunard liner Saxonia (sailed from Liverpool, England).

The only other information I have is that he was drafted into military service for WW1 in 1917 at Lowell City no 1, Massachusetts.

Any help finding him on a census record or what happened to him would be appreciated.

Regards
Paul

Here's his WW1 draft registration card.  This is just a registration; it doesn't mean he was necessarily drafted:

The 1909 passenger manifest says Petrus Noppe was a weaver & going to Waltham [Massachusetts] which makes sense because there were lots of mills in that area and he would have been able to find work. It also mentions a wife in Belgium. He was going to a brother-in-law P. Spillemaus or Spilleman[?] in Waltham. He was travelling with Petrus Maes, also a weaver with wife at home who is listed as a cousin of P. Spillemaus.
There is a record of Petrus Noope leaving Liverpool, England on that voyage which says he arrived in the U.K. in Harwich which makes sense as it is not far from Belgian ports.

On the 1917 draft registration card he's listed as a weaver, living & working in Lowell, Mass. (only about 20 miles from Waltham).

I haven't found Petrus Noppe in any census records yet- he should at least be in 1910 census- but suspect his name could have been mis-indexed.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thank you for your help, the fact Petrus NOPPE was married before leaving Belgium was a big help, and I found his marriage: 20th May 1908 in Sint-Niklaas to Bertha Theresia VERCAUTEREN.

There is a passenger record for 1913 from Liverpool to Boston for both a Petrus NAPPE and his wife Bertha, which looking at the original document, it is actually NOPPE.

So a step further...
