Fosier/Foster from Rye
« on: Monday 25 August 14 01:41 BST (UK) »
Hello

I was hoping that someone may be able to help me with this please.
My ancestor was Sarah Fosier or Foster. She married Thomas Gasson in 1773 and then Richard Frost in 1783. She died in 1839 aged 94 (all this happened in Rye in Sussex). I found what i think may be her baptism in 1745 in Rye but i'm after a bit of proof to confirm it is her. I noticed that there is another Sarah Fosier marrying in Rye in 1767 to Robert Smith (how do i confirm this is not the Sarah that was baptized in 1745 which i think is mine?). Does anyone have access to the marriages in Rye to see who the witness's were to both of Sarah's marriages please, i am hoping this may give me some clues as to who her family is.
Hope i haven't confused anyone. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks
Rich

The only record for Sarah "Fosier" on the Sussex Marriage Index is the marriage to Robert Smith (bach sojourner) 23 may 1767.  She is a spinster otp.  Witnesses J Holman and H Gibbon.   The marriage is by licence so it would be worth tracing that.
There is only one other Fosier on the index.  John of Rye marrying Ann Marshall at Udimore in 1758 so it does look as it it is a mistranscription of Foster.

1773 marriage has witnesses Jn Kidd and Jn Dadd
No witnesses for the marriage to Richard Frost.  Both shown as widowed.

Thankyou ever so much for taking the time to look for me. Will try and look into the marriage license a bit deeper. Strange how there are no witness's to the Richard Frost marriage.
Thanks again

Hi,

The old chestnut of reversing the bride & groom on the SMI shows witnesses Thomas Whorwell and Isaac Gateland at the Sarah Gasson/Richard Frost marriage.

One more thing

A removal order involving Richard Frost & Sarah from Rye Foreign to St Mary at Hill, London was quashed in the Lewes Sessions 15 Jan 1784.

I'm very impressed with what's been found for me. It will be a great help. The removal order is interesting because I had not imagined there being a London link.
