A potential ancestor (1688) was christened,it says,at WDBS Sussex ... so what does 'WDBS' mean please?

What does "it" refer to?  Where have you found that string of letters?

No document from that era would have used an initialism like that.  Most likely a place name like Worth which a transcriber couldn't read.
Rutter, Sampson, Swinerd, Head, Redman in Kent.  Others in Cheshire, Manchester, Glos/War/Worcs.
