Two years on, and I'm wondering whether there have been any additional resources put on line in the meantime which might help me around this apparent brick wall?

I checked the CD of Phillimore's Leicestershire marriages but Castle Donington is not one of the parishes transcribed.

Two suggestions then, make a request for a lookup in the Leicestershire forum or hire the film from the LDS to see from whence the parties came, you'll also get witnesses that can sometimes help in identification.

Cheers
