At worst, they can say "No", at best they will send you a copy without fuss (if you send them the date etc) or, in between, they will send you a copy and ask for a couple of pounds.  Anyway, they tell me e-mails are very cheap, nothing to lose.

They are very helpful at Carlisle. The archives is closed to the public on Monday's but I can look it up for you on Tuesday/Wednesday.  Meantime here is a tiny part of the 1865 25 inches to the mile map of Carlisle. The road going north-west to south east is Botchergate (but you don't know how near the mark you were when you called it Bothergate).

Yes Leprechaun and alpinecottage, it is difficult to read. I would go for Maxwell. There were Maxwells in the area at this time but I have no record of Marwell's. Having said that Marwell seems to fill the spacing far better than Maxwell.
