Hi Lizzie
Ok so thats good some of the info was of use.

Hensington as you may know included Bladon for a while. The Benjamin you mention in Tackley is a good one I will have a look at Tackley PR's and see if that offers anything.

I looked at the OFHS Marr Index for any marriage of a Churchill to a Claydon or a Palmer to a Claydon and didnt find one. That's assuming 1. the marriage took place in Oxfordshire and 2. that there was one????

Sometimes a child is given the name of a family friend or benefactor, but where it is two children it looks more like a family connection. This seems a typical working class family so I doubt that they were honouring a benefactor who had left a large inheritance. In both mine and my husband's family we have found surnames used as christian names which go back as many as three or four generations before we found the origin.

I have found a post on RC from someone looking for Deddington Churchills so will see if they have any info about that Benjamin.

Lizzie
The Benjamin of Tackley you mentioned.

I see his burial at St Nicholas Church, Tackley:

6 Nov 1874 aged 72 of Stratford upon Avon

So this looks like the Benjamin baptism I found and appears to eliminate that one from your search ?

On 8 March 1806 at  SS Peter & Paul's Church, Deddington there is a Benjamin Churchill baptised s o Joseph and Hester - now this looks promising don't you think?

Yes I think the Woodstock Benjamin is out of it now and the Deddington one is tempting and I keep coming back to that as the only one in the time frame. I have contacted the person researching Deddington Churchills and see whether they have any more information on him

The Deddington Benjamin 's parents were Joseph and Hester nee Gilks - note there is a variant of Gliks to GilkEs.

They were married after banns at SS Peter & Paul Church, on 19 Dec 1805 botp and wits; Susanna Churchill & Thomas Knibbs ( he witnessed quite a few)

Just checked all the Deddington baptisms on familysearch. There are 3 Benjamins baptised in the time period 1806 to 1811,
1806 to Joseph and (H)ester. 1809 to John and Mary, 1810 to Samuel and Elizabeth.

I agree the Joseph / Ester one is most likely, the time is closer to the birth year calculated at age of death and Joseph's occupation on 1841 and 1851 censuses is carpenter. They have a son Joseph who is also a carpenter.
John is an attorney in 1841 and registrar and coroner in 1851 and has a son who is a solicitor, so less likely to have a son who is a carpenter.
Can't find Samuel in Deddinton, but there is a Samuel / Elizabeth couple in Banbury in 1841 of around the right age. He is listed as independent.
So it looks like Joseph and Esther and he was born in Deddington, unless the Deddington Benjamin turns up somewhere else.

Hi

I saw the others and discounted them and particularly as there is your Carpentry connection - if it were my search I would opt for the Deddington fellow but keep a look out per chance another pops up.
In the PR's the Churchill  family is very big in the Deddington area and travel to Bladon was comparatively easy even for those days.
