Oxfordshire FHS computer meeting - Monday 2 June 2014
« on: Tuesday 27 May 14 20:25 BST (UK) »
The next computer meeting of the Oxfordshire Family History Society will take place on Monday 2 June 2014. It will be held at the usual venue at Exeter Hall, Oxford Road, Kidlington, Oxford OX5 1AB. Doors open at 7.15pm, with the subject of the talk at 7.30pm being :-

The OFHS Oxford City Cemetery Grave Register Transcription Project.

This will be presented by Bryan Bowen.

Oxford City Cemeteries Service has grave registers dating back over a century. These relate to the four city cemeteries - Botley, Headington, Rose Hill and Wolvercote.

In late 2011, this society offered to transcribe the registers such that the data could be used electronically by the Cemeteries Service, and also to enable us to incorporate it into our Search Services and publish it on CD. There are about 50,000 names within the database, dating from the 1880s when the cemeteries were first created.

Bryan, a new member to the Society at the time, was one of about a dozen volunteers who tackled the transcription work from scans of the registers. Subsequently, he was involved in checking and collating the data, and will talk about the project as a newcomer to transcription. He will outline the processes and challenges, as well as some of the learning aids that he discovered.

The Society is working on publishing the data, and will keep the this mailing list informed as to progress.

All members, potential members and their guests are welcome.
