Great grandson of Henry Rochester. I have the tree back to Francis Brickles/Breckles (the spelling suddenly gets variable) marrying Ann Stockins, St Clement, Ipswich, Suffolk, 12 Jan 1768. They had legal settlement in Nacton April 1772 when they were removed from St Peter, Ipswich to Nacton with two children, also Francis and Ann. Not found them in Nacton so much more work is needed to go further back. There are still plenty of side branches to track down as well. There is also a Breckles family, traced back to Ipswich 1790s by another researcher - I have the info 2nd hand - but as yet no link proven between the two.

Presumably you may be related as well?

Quite a distant relationship through Sarah Clemett, her brother's second marriage was to my 2 x 1st cousin. I get sidetracked by some of the twigs sometimes and the Breckels are interesting. Is it an English name or from somewhere else - maybe Germany or similar??

There was an NZ reunion of Clemett, Harmon and Parker folks at Easter 2009. I was put in touch with the organiser somehow, I think it was through the Kaikoura museum. I supplied information for their publication for the reunion & I have a copy here (unnumbered but c.200 pages, privately issued, no ISBN or anything like that). It's mostly a list of names. Mentions Alexander McDougall Clemett 1856-1937 (is he the link?) but not his descendants as far as I can see with a quick look.

As for the origins of the name - there is a village of Breckles in Norfolk where a John de Breccles was recorded in 1250, A Benedict de Breccles was rector of Grimston in Norfolk in 1310 and there are odd references such as James Brecles and Hugh Breckles who were put out as apprentices by the overseers of the poor of Earl Stonham (Suffolk) in 1664 and 1665. So my feeling is it is English, but as you say it also sounds German or Dutch and so may have roots back to Saxon times which is where they all meet. Who knows? The chances of proving any tree that far back are miniscule. At the moment I'm filling gaps in what I already know as and when I get time.

On ancestry there is a Henry Rochester Breckles  Married Sarah Marcella Clemmett who was born in Kaikoura new zealand 16th July 1864 daughter of
Christopher clement and Catherine McInnes

Says he arrived in London in 7th may 1894  and left at some later date for Calcutta India
You may of course already have this info

Yes Alexander Clemett  - he married one of my McKenzie relatives, and they lived in the Far North of NZ. I hope you don't mind me chasing your relatives, but I get a bit sick of the born, did nothing, died - I like the ones who are interesting, like my grandfather's brother who, as far as I knew had an ordinary life - then I found some info (quite by accident) where he'd joined the Royal Artillery and served in Bengal, India, where his 2 children were born (and one died). I am still trying to find him getting back to UK, and then I know his wife died and he went to Australia. (he had originally emigrated to NZ as a 7yr old in 1880 from Norfolk)

I will look for the navy records.

Hr Breckels 30 farmer  mrs J 29   master JH 8 master B6 and miss K 4
all travelled to England 3rd Class on the Doric arriving as you know 7/05/1894
