In 1851 there is a Susan Frost daughter of Jacob Frost and Mary Ann..

There is a potential marriage for Jacob Frost to Mary Ann Thompson in 1842 in Tendring RD.  This Mary Ann could be the 16 year old Mary Ann Thompson in the same household as Joseph and Isabella Gaymor. So potentially she was a daughter of Isabella from Isabella's marriage to William Thompson.

Family search has a baptism for Mary Anne in Bradfield on 15 August 1824 to William and Isabella Thompson.

Hi Barbara & Suffolk*sue,

I awake up this morning to find several messages - wow.

What you both have found is very interesting and appears to lead me to the father of Robert Rivvens being a John Rivvens, who appears in my tree as a “Ribbans”.

This is something I’ve been trying to un-ravel as I have a Robert Hostler Ribbans bapt. 2-6-1811 Rushmere St.Andrew, Suffolk  the s/o John (above) and un-named mother “late Hosler”. This I believe is another variation of Horsely.

In all the censuses Robert says he was born in Witnesham a neighbouring parish to Rushmere

So it would seem that this is the history;

Isabella Howlett born 1801c Essex (Fordham)

24-10-1820  marries Wm.Thompson   Bradfield, Essex (IGI has a Wm. Thompson burial in Bradfield 9-9-1828)

5-10-1830 Isabella Thompson, a widow -    marries  Joseph Gaymer   Bradfield, Essex

21-2-1834            burial Joseph Gaymer

8-9-1837 Robert Rivvens - m - Sarah Barber St.Mary, Lawford  (IGI has a burial for Sarah Raven in Gt.Tey, Essex  14-9-1844 - thats another name variation of which I have accumalated many)

In the 1841 census for Manningtree,  Robert is with Sarah aged 20 with two children - Charity aged 3 & Elijah aged 1)

In 1851  Charity is aged 12 but a Joseph appears aged 14, a  Boot & Shoe maker born Bradfield

Nowhere can I find a marriage for Robert to Isabella - perhaps she didn’t want to chance a 3rd marriage!!

This could account as to why she is some 10 years older than Robert.

Isabella Ribbans is buried Dec ¼ 1876 Edmonton Reg. Dist.  aged 74.

This district covers Cheshunt where they were living unto 1871 and where Robert is in 1881 as father-in-law.

Hi Alan

Yes, there was a lot to digest!

I agree with most of your interpretation.  2 points though:

In 1841 there is a Joseph Gaymor in the same household as Isabella.  He is 65.  He could be her second husband.  I think you need to check for more information on the 1834 burial to see if there is an age stated. It could be an infant son of Isabella and her second husband Joseph Gaymor or someone less closely related.  If Isabella's husband died in early 1834 there is a question mark over the father of Joseph junior who is 5 in the 1841 census and, as Joseph Ribbans, is 14 in the 1851 census. It would  be useful to find a baptism for this Joseph Gaymor.

I am not sure about the burial in Great Tey in 1844.  I think the death for Sarah I noted in a previous post in 1842 in the Tendring disrict is more likely.

The birth certificates for Charity or Elijah and for Isabella Gaymor would clarify/confirm the findings so far.

The 1834 burial for Joseph Gaymer has the age 2 yrs old.

Joseph Gaymer baptised 4th September, 1831
son of Joseph and Isabella.

so this would appear to be the said child.

Thank you for looking that up.  So it looks as though the 65 year old Joseph might be the husband of Isabella.

There are these 2 death registrations:
Deaths Sep 1852   Gaymer  Joseph    Tendring  4a 138
Deaths Dec 1855   Gaymer  Joseph     Tendring  4a 140

Family search has a burial in Bradfield on 3 January 1856 which suggests that the latter death may be related to your family.

Thanks again Sue.

So the older man fits in with the 65 year old Joesph in the 1841 census.  The man who died in Mistley must be the Joseph who was married to Lucy.  they are living in Mistley in 1851 and the age fits well.
