Michael and Bridget Carroll
« on: Monday 26 May 14 00:08 BST (UK) »
I am looking for any information I can find on Michael and Bridget (nee Murphy) Carroll. They are my great great grandparents and my gran has always said they lived "in or just outside Dublin". I have searched every possibility but I'm not sure if I'm missing something as I am not an expert on this.
They had 4 sons and possibly a daughter. Two of their sons were John (b. 1895/6) and Michael (b.1898/9) who both moved to Glasgow where they married local girls. Another son was Robert who spent time in Mountjoy prison.

Many thanks

A check on IrishGenealogy.ie for the names 'Michael Carroll" and 'Bridget Murphy' together, surprisingly only gives this one result.  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0zfq/
An 1892 baptism of Robert Joseph Carroll. Looking for this 9 year old Robert Carroll in  the 1901 census gives this family which looks a good match names wise and especially with the 'Murphy' visitor

Do you have Michael Carroll's occupation from the Glasgow marriage certs or anything to prove the link. When was Robert in Mountjoy - he is not showing on the prison records.

I am pretty sure the family in the 1901 census is them as I know Michael ran a fruit stall which it states here. He may have changed trades however because in both John and Michael's marriage certs it states Labourer under "Father's Occupation". I also know that sometime between 1901 and 1917 Bridget passed away from what I believe to be TB.
I don't know the dates Robert was in prison as my only source of information is my gran who just remembers her uncle Robert taking her walks to the prison when she was small and would holiday over in Ireland. She is almost certain it was around the time of the 1916 rising or the civil war.

Thank you so much for finding the census results! I'm over the moon!

Hi hevhev
That explains why I couldn't find the family in the 1911 census
There is a Bridget Carroll died in 1907 and buried in Glasnevin Cemetery with an address of 34 Church Street - same address as the family in the 1901 census. Also coming up for 1907 with a Church Street address (no number) is an 11 month old Bridget Carroll - so possibly her daughter. You can get the records by buying credits at www.glasnevintrust.ie. If you want to get the marriage cert and go back another generation or Bridget's death cert , then let's know.

EDIT: Do you know if Robert Carroll also went to Glasgow between 1916 and 1920 or when he died ?

Bureau of Military History
Witness statement of George O'Flanagan mentions being stationed at Church St bridge with a Bob Carroll,
if he was captured with George he would probably have gone to Richmond Jail and then shipped out to Staffordshire Jail.

Wasn't sure this was Robert but having had a look through the files, it is definitely him as his parents are named.
He made a Military pension application which details all of his activities from 1916 -1923.
http://mspcsearch.militaryarchives.ie/search.aspx?formtype=simple
just press the search button and his file is the 4th down. There are 3 downloads containing all the material in the file. Have a look at the other results also as some other applications mention him . ;)
