Anne Dempsey (1825-1895)
« on: Thursday 15 May 14 05:32 BST (UK) »
:) Rathangan Kildare Ireland is associated with Anne who died in Australia. Her mother came out to Australia in 1864: Charlotte Dempsey (1805 - 1874). She married Bernard Dempsey in 1823 and had 4 males and 7 females. One sister of Anne's, Mary came out here too, marrying a John Clare.
Both Anne's only 2 daughters became RC nuns. On the trip out here Anne used the name Watkins rather than Dempsey as she was alone and travelled with a male friend of that name for protection.

Would love some documented evidence of a connection to Ireland. One of her grand daughters was the first woman in NSW Parliament: indeed, her portrait painting hangs in the foyer still. She did a great deal for women.

Why is she associated with Rathangan? Was she born there?
Are Bernard and Charlotte from Kildare?
Do you know Charlotte's name before she married?
Do you know any of the 4 sons names?

Lots of questions I know but I'm not finding anything with the info so far.

I have no more info other than a Patrick Walkin MAY have accompanied her on the Ward Chapman ship from Bristol to Australia: she was 16.
I can't find where I got Rathangan from.

I have been corrected by a better researcher than I am:
“our” Anne Dempsey travelled to Australia aboard the ship ‘Sir Charles Napier’ 1842. She used the name “Anne Watkins”.
