Re Newman Family of Wiltshire
« on: Monday 05 May 14 06:38 BST (UK) »
I need some new idea's concerning my husband Bryan's Newman Branch
I have tried figuring out this tangled mess but keep coming back to square one
Here goes
Richard Newman Born 1770 Wiltshire
In the 1841 census list's Richard Newman with a birthdate of 1770 with wife Sarah and son Mark
Richard Newman married a Sarah Lawes in 1799
Sarah was born 4.5.1777 Salisbury
They had the following children
Thomas born 1800 Coombe Bisset
Phineas born 1802 Coombe Bissett died 1880 Maitland,Aus
Mary born 1805 Coombe Bissett
Louisa born 1808 Coombe Bissett died 1811 Coombe Bissett
Eliza born 1812 Coombe Bissett
George born 1814 Coombe Bisset
Louisa born 1817 Coombe Bissett
Mark born 1821 Coombe Bissett

Nearly every person has this Richard Newman born 1770 as the son of Richard Newman and Elizabeth Butcher though he is not
That Richard Newman born 1770 Burbage married Elizabeth Scarlett and had a mistress Mary jane Rawlings

I have lookef at parish registers there are 4 Richard Newman's
one born 1761 christened 1762 to George Newman and Hester Norris
The other Richard Newman born 1768 son of Robert Newman and Ann Hulbert he is not this one!
3rd is Richard Newman born 1775 son of Charles Newman and Mary Colborn not this line either!
So only 4 Richard Newman' were born in Wiltshire and they are not my Husband's Richard Newman
So who were his parent's?
Was he born in Wiltshire?
Could he be the Richard born 1770 Burbage and married after 1st wife Elizsbeth Scarlett?
I need some new insight into thid because I feel I'm banging my head against a wall!
please help
My husbands line is Phineas Newman his first wife was Mary Delicate born 1799 West harnham
wife 2 was Harriet Curtis
They were around the Salisbury,Coombe Bisset and West Harnham area's which are area's of Salisbury could that be a clue?
I don't know

Hi!

Still looking but agree that Burbage Richard is the wrong one. Also the Broad Hinton one.

Were you aware that Phineas Newman was actually born(one presumes) and baptised in Ebbesbourne Wake,Wiltshire?  He's the only one of his family,by the looks of it.  The rest were Coombe.

Phineas is listed as "Phinehas"  and his parents are Richard and Sarah. He was baptised at EW on 10 Jul 1803.

Hi lulubird

Yes I found Phineas Newman being born in 1803 ebblesbourne wake
The place is still round the Salisbury area
I had another look at the 1841 census
listing Richard age 71 and Sarah aged 63 with son Mark aged 21
The other children had left Phineas to Australia
Trying to find out whom the other's married
By the census Richard was older than Sarah coukd he have younger?
I found a Richard Newman born 1781 in Trowbridge to a john and Lucy
The other is Richard born 1778 in box to a Richard and Hester
In the census he had the yes of being born in Wiltshire
He died in 1846 Alderbury and Sarah died 1842 Alderbury
Could he have been born on the boarder of another county and said he was from Wiltshire?
I wish uk death certificates listed parents! Lol
Would be so much easier!

There was some Newman's at Bradford-on-Avon,   the one I looked at seemed pretty rich.

Hi Daveke

Richard Newman was an Ag Labourer but that doesn't mean his family had no money
His son's first wife Mary Delicate had an illegitimate son William in 1819 but after Mary married Edward Smith and had 2 children Clara and Daniel
But when Mary Delicate had William she stayed at the home of Richard Newman and the babies father paid him for a room etc
After whatever happened to Edward Smith Mary eventually married Richards son Phineas Newman and had one child a daughter Caroline
in 1835 Mary Died not sure what from
Though maybe Richard did have money then became an ag lab?
There is a website I sent a message to didn't recieve a reply
Also message the one name studies of Newman at the guild of one name studies
What gets me is no one knows about this family of Newman's and I ask why
The other branches they know about but not this family
They may have a connection to the other families but where I have no idea
Hope this gives everyone more clues if I can

Perhaps the well-off Newmans ignored the poor ones.

I looked up the Richard Newman,  than I have.

There is a Richard Newman with a wife called Susannah,

and apparently two children called Richard and Ann born around 1811 and 1819,   and Ann married a man called George Hale.

In 1871 and 1881  Richard Jr is there with sister Ann Hale and brother-in-law George Hale   and some nephews called Gibbs,   living at a place called Bearfield at Bradford

Hi again,

Richard Newman's still evading capture,I'm afraid.  However, you did say that you wanted info on any descendents,I believe.

Eliza Newman married James Mitchell in Coombe Bissett on 18 Dec 1834. Both were of the parish.  They appear to have had one surviving son  -  Frederick(born in Coombe in 1839).  Eliza died in Coombe in 1884 and her husband shortly afterwards.  Frederick is last seen in the 1901 census ,a labourer lodging in a boarding house in Southwark.

Louisa Newman married John Macklin in Coombe Bissett on 15 Dec 1834.  She died, probably as a result ofchildbirth as she had a daughter Louisa about the same time,in late 1841 in Coombe. Baby Louisa was baptised in Coombe on 31 Oct 1841.  The couple also had a daughter Harriet (baptised in Coombe on 23 Aug 1835) and another called Mary Ann (baptised in Coombe on 31 Oct 1837.

Louisa's widower remarried a year later to a woman called Anna Lawes.

I believe that Mark Newman,Richard and Sarah's youngest son,may have died about the same time as his sister in 1841 in Coombe.

This is purely from online research so you would need certificates to verify this lot!

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi lulubird and others

Finding other branches might be clues in finding more info about Richard
Maybe the rich Newman's ignored the poor ones?
I have seen this a few times on my fathers family tree
They are married to one but marry another
Could Richard Newman really being the richard who married Elizabeth Scarlett?
Richard did have a mistress
could he have been been bored and married sarah Lawes in 1799 Salisbury
How far is Burbage from Salisbury or from Coombe Bisset,?
What do you think
The only problem is that Richard died in 1848
So back to square one
Finding out who his other children married might help because they may know more
As I live in Australia researching is hard down here
But keep giving me what you have and I'll see if they connect
