Cartmel: local knowledge wanted
« on: Saturday 25 October 14 10:49 BST (UK) »
I have looked at a transcribed burial register entry from Cartmel Priory in 1836.  The 'abode' is shown as 'Ch.  Town'.

Can anyone who lives at or knows Cartmel well please tell me where this might be?

I suspect that it might be Churchtown, an area of Garstang - if you Google "Churchtown Garstang" you will find a fair amount of information.

But Garstang is nowhere near Cartmel!  If you look at the Lancs opc page there are several burials at Cartmel Priory of people whose abode is given as Ch Town, also plenty from others nearby places, such as Grange and Flookburgh and other smaller places or parts of Cartmel, such as Green.   You'll need a local historian or resident to help out, or maybe Barrow-in-Furness or Kendal Local History office at the libraries there will have more information.

Thanks to all contributors.  The lady concerned was baptised in London, born to someone whose father was unmarried but she was left an annuity in his will.
Lots of mystery...
