Joseph Lawson Reed
« on: Saturday 27 March 10 15:32 GMT (UK) »
I had previously asked for information on this person, but new evidence has come to light & we now think he stayed in USA & got married as an obituary which was found in a newspaper for his brother's death in 1935 indicated that he had emigrated.

He originally was a crewman for the Slavic Prince (arrival date 08/06/1922 to New York ) but was transferred to the Celtic Prince - have no idea where this ship went afterwards though.

We cannot find him in the 1930 US Census - he was born in Northumerland 1/4 to Dec 1898

Any further information would be of great help.

There's a Joseph L. Reed born 12 Jan. 1898 and died 2 Feb. 1963 in Hennepin Co., Minnesota.  Mother's maiden name was Shanley.  Could that be him?  The Minnesota death index is here:  http://people.mnhs.org/dci/Search.cfm

Thanks for looking but Joseph's mother's maiden name was Stott, so the one you have found is not him.

Have also found his sister, Sarah travelling to US with her husband Herbert Crase on 11 Jun 1954 - we think it is to visit Joseph.  The address they were visiting was 376 69th Street, Brooklyn, NY.  Is there anyway of finding out who lived there during this era ?

I have found a possible Joseph Reed on the US 1930 census in Brooklyn Block no 8 as follows -

Joseph Reed Aged 29 - bn in England - both parents English & yr of Immigration 1919
Wife Margaret Aged 20 - bn in NY - both parents Irish
Daughters Margaret (1) and Dorathy (1/12)

It also states that they were married in around 1925 when Margaret was 15.  Is there any way of finding this marriage so we can establish if we have the right person ?

Thanks in advance

There is a New York City marriage index at www.italiangen.org.

Thanks - have tried that & there is a potential "Joseph L Reed" but that is in Manhattan Sept 1924, but when you click on Brides Information there is "no information found".

I think that's just a problem with the index.  If you want to order the certificate, it should give you all the information.
