Looking at the 1880 census, there is a chance that William Boyd is living with other people, if I am reading the image correctly.
1517 Meoyamensing(?) Avenue [Could this be the William J. Boyd from the 1879 directory?]
Elizabeth Bouvier, age 63, widowed, Keeping House, born Pennsylvania
William ? Bouvier, son, age 38, Butcher...
Charles? Bouvier, son, age 36, Butcher...
Susie, Granddaughter, age 16...
Frank Heoslop(?), age 25, Son in Law, Clerk in Store...
Ella, wife, age 24...
Bella, daughter, age 4...
Edward, son, age 6/12...
William Boyd, white, age 40, married, Clerk in Navy Yard, born New York, parents born Maine
Maggie Auld, age 32, daughter, born Penna, parents born Penna
Charles Haines, age 18, Works in Store, born Penna, parents born Penna
Julia Burke, age 20, Servant, born Ireland as were parents.

There is no notation for William (not son, servant, boarder, etc.)
Perhaps Maggie was Elizabeth's daughter, not William's?

Ok, thank you (regarding the image)

1517 Moyamensing
It may have been a hotel at one time.  If so, perhaps that is why William is shown as being born in New York (someone guessed where he was born?)?

That would make sense since, whoever he is, he couldn't have a 32 year-old daughter.  I wonder where his wife is?  I'd be tempted to call him mine, even with the parents born in Maine [landlady could have given false information], except that this William Boyd then seems to show up in Brooklyn 20 years later and his parents are still born in Maine.

ps - Thanks for helping!  I'm sure you realize that William J. Boyd is not a critical individual in my family tree but these loose ends bug me and I like to try to chase them down.

You're welcome.  Now that I have access to a well-known site, I, too, like to try to find out about distant relatives/ancestors.  I'll continue to have a look around, as I haven't exhausted all attempts yet.

The distant ones are fun.  I would never in a million years have found the Brooklyn relatives except for an offhand remark made by my grandmother that her father had a cousin named Marion Richmond and some cousins named Boyd.  That and the mention of other cousins in Brooklyn named Stalla opened up two enormous branches of the tree.

You're lucky that your grandmother shared the information and that you were able to find them.   :)

Oh, well.  It also helps to eliminate people.  Thanks.

With just one or two small exceptions, my grandmother's information has been accurate and even where she went wrong, it wasn't 100% wrong.  I quickly found the correct Richmonds and Boyds but it took years to figure out exactly how they connected to g-grandpa.  Eventually I found ggg-uncle Anthony's will where he mentioned his sister Jane "Ritchman" [Richmond].  Bingo.
