Hei Rootschatters around the world, especially those with Irish ancestors. This is just a little bit of Market Research to see if the idea of an Irish Meet might be feasible. Right, the poll is up and running. If this idea receives good support this could be a Meet to remember for a long time.

Marvellous idea Chris. I did try to go to Hanna one in Scotland a few years ago, but it got out of hand financially so had to forgo it. Heard it was a terrific success though.
I have been back to Ireland so many times of late that I would have to wait awhile before another trip to get some of the old green stuff saved, but if the timing was right I would be keen.

Thanks for the support so far but the research into this has just started. The idea of a weekend event is looking good. There is a long way to go yet. Hopefully, maybe this is being over ambitious, the number of people interested in the idea will run into three figures. The poll at the moment is adequate for getting a rough idea of the nature of Meet people would like. At a later date it will probably be necessary to have a second poll - moving plans forward from the nature to the content of the meet.
Low numbers are relatively easy to handle. A meeting for a drink or two and an informal meal. If numbers rise then problems automatically arise. a pub venue with people sitting round a couple of tables in one corner changes to booking a room and maybe seating arrangements and table plans. At the moment it is OK to watch how things develop however it may not be too early to ask if anyone is willing to assist in carrying the idea a few stages further. Does anyone feel they have a particular speciality in the organisation of such an event? In case you are puzzled by what I mean, Val tells me I have a habit of shooting off at tangents leaving her totally lost, a simple example would be a bring and buy sale one person organising the tea, sandwich and sticky bun table, another the homemade cakes and jams, maybe another fruit and veg.
I am looking forward to seeing lots of you when this great event does take place.

when I was in Ireland last year I met 8 woman over from England they had rented a house between them for week it had cost them £350 and they had got cheap flights from Newcastle for £29 return

You have 009 there but I have made allowances for your maths. 009 is close enough. :D

July 2006 is a thought Sharon. It might be a great idea to meet in Belfast bang in the middle of the marching season. :D Most of the factories close for the fortnight, everyone flies off to somewhere in the sun for their annual holiday.
We would have the place to ourselves although there would probably be some visitors from overseas. We could watch the Twelfth of July parade and enjoy some of the Blood and Thunder bands like the Pride of the Hill Flute band from Rathfriland http://www.poth.co.uk/about/about.htm :D
Sharon, if you would like a July or August Meet plan one in England, Scotland or Wales. I see little point in bringing a possible Irish meet forward to sometime this year. Why rush things when, with some good advance planning, there is a possibility of organising a memorable Meet with a record number of people attending ???

Probably most people will need a date before committing themselves fully. What are your views in bringing the Meet forward to July/August this year? I feel that leaving the date of the event open for a while and having the Meet next year allows time to get more interest than has been gained in the past two days.

I think I should send a PM to Saz :D She will be ripping that no one has told her about this event :D It should be a great one. The Irish have a worldwide reputation for planning really good parties. I hope we manage to get a large number of people interested. Plenty of firm promises to be there for the occasion and a low number of drop outs.

Would love to do the Irish meet up ( not told her yet ::) ) could stretch to a few days then, and what Audery suggested about renting somewhere is a good idea.
It can work out surprisingly cheaper to travel home ( an airfare) than to go by train any where else in Britain.
And YES the Irish do know how to party with a Capital P

I suppose you might as well meet people here Val. That Sarah Beresford may have been the sister of a guy named Beresford at St Columba's College, Rathfarnham. Something tells me his name might have been Guy Beresford. Michael might remember.

July 2007 in Belfast sounds good to me - but would consider different month / venue if work permitted.
The earlier we set date / venue the better as flights can be quite cheap if booked well in advance. I cant do June 2007 as my darling daughter is getting married then and I will be in Ibiza (I hope) for much of August.
I wondered if PRONI might be willing to facilitate some daytime activity for us if Belfast is chosen as venue - we have found them more than happy to help out rellie searchers in any way they can!

for 2006,especially rootschatters who live
nearest to both venues.maybe even one
mini meet for belfast and another for dublin.

I was just looking for a way to broach this subject. Belfast members could have very mini meets in the Central Library in Royal Avenue on Mondays and Thursdays which are their late nights. We could keep an eye on incoming messages re the 2007 event and send immediate replies on the library computers. It might be an idea to get a small team together to arrange a small Belfast Meet. This would enable us to see how well we work as a unit, give us a chance to iron out problems and might let us know if we were capable of undertaking arrangements for a larger Meet. A lot of the arrangements can be handled by people using computers. It does not matter where they are based but some of the finer detail will need one or two people on the ground.
Some sort of event will have to take place in Dublin unless there is a sufficiently large enough group of Rootschat members there to handle a larger event. I may be wrong but as far as I know no Dublin member has yet posted on this thread.

I know a bit about the Irish in England. Some English tended to lump three categories together - the Irish, non caucasians and travellers. They had the audacity to put a notice in the windows of guest houses, pubs even shops saying "NO IRISH" etc. Even in this day and age, the 21st Century, you still find this attitude in a few places.

I found another Dubliner - katebray and one forty odd miles down the road kated. I was looking on the Dublin board. I am talking to a friend in Nigeria at the moment. Could you see if you can find a couple more. Things are not made any easier as so many people do not disclose a location.

The national archive is a great place, lots of resources there. If people wanted to check out the parish registers they're at the national library http://www.nli.ie/family_hr.htm. The Dublin City archives at Pearse St is also a good place to go http://www.dublincity.ie/living_in_the_city/libraries/heritage_and_history/dublin_city_archives/
and is only a few hundred yards away from the GRO in Lombard St
http://www.groireland.ie/faqs.htm. All of these places are in the city centre.
Chris, I don't know how these meets work, do people want to get to places where they can access resources, as in the above places, or is it more of a social gathering, or a mix of both? I find that when I get a chance to get to the places I mentioned the time goes so fast it unbelieveable. (With three children its often difficult to get the time to actually get to these places. So much easier with my English based research, all of which I have done without leaving the house, with much help from Rootschat :D). I could check with the library on Monday and see if they have a meeting room available for groups.

The last post on this subject was two or three weeks ago. This is just a gentle reminder so that you do not nod off and forget about the subject until this time next year. :D
Did anyone attend the International Genealogy Festival 2004 September 30th to October 3rd in Co. Sligo ??? It was a four day event with a comprensive programme of events. I am doing my best to get some details about the event...is it an annual event or was it a one off ??? RootsChat has approximately 30,000 members, there are many genealogical groups and local history groups as well as several Irish based genealogy web sites. Interest in the subject is definitely growing rapidly. It may be aiming too high but if the Sligo event was a one off I feel it is worth while looking at the possibility of another International event 8) http://www.irelandfestival.com Please watch this space. Tentative approaches are being made to one or two people with excellent media contacts and experience in organising and hosting such events. There are at least twelve months to go but May or June might be an idea. Are there any further developments on smaller meets in Ireland this year ???
UPDATE: I posted a message to the Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Centre asking whether their 2004 Genealogy Festival was a once off or takes place each year.
This event, the Local and Family History Fair, is organised by the Ulster Historical Foundation. It looks as though it will be an annual event although they may be in a different venue this year as the Ulster Museum is closing in August for two years whilst it has a full refurb. I feel, no matter which venue is settled upon for a RootsChat meet in Ireland, other organisations should be involved.

Hello Chris, and fellow genealogy addicts.
I would love to attend this 2007 meet but unless my financial situation improves( and who knows, it may? :) ) it will be hard for me to make it.
I didn't vote as it would be too speculative.
Its a long journey from British Columbia, and costly. I was born in Cheshire England but have never been to Ireland and would love to see the counties my ancestors came from, Leitrim ( Boyle) and Tyrone(Boyle).
The Tyrone 'Boyles' probably came from further West , back in the past, as I read they originated in Donegal.
It would be nice to know where my Shaughnessys came from, but on the Manchester Census, going back quite far it always just says 'origin Ireland.'
So, if I were able to make this trip, I would love to look around the whole West and Northwest of Ireland to soak up the feeling of the place.
It seems pretty unlikely I will ever find exactly where my ancestors came from. I need to access church records and as I have no idea whereabouts in the counties they came from, its pretty hopeless.
For you lucky people who live closer, I envy you :). What a wonderful opportunity to meet and maybe solve genealogical puzzles with like-minded new friends. Have a lovely time!

I posted a message to the Sligo Heritage and Genealogy Centre asking whether their 2004 Genealogy Festival was a once off or takes place each year.
I received a reply informing me that the event was a once off.
There was an Irish Homecoming Festival in 1992. Events were held, mainly in September, in many towns and villages throughout Ireland. There were a few genealogy events including -
8th - 13th Sept North Down Genealogy Exhibition
11th - 13th Sept First North Mayo Genealogy Festival.
14th - 21st Sept Dun Laoghaire Genealogical Festival
17th - 22nd Sept Kilkenny Genealogical Festival

This event does not take place until sometime next year. I am doing little bits of research. I hope more people read this thread, show interest in the event, vote and indicate that they may attend. Rail services to Dublin are good so those people living or spending a holiday somewhere some distance from Dublin will be able to travel there for a day if they wish. There is no need to stay in central Dublin as the DART Dublin Area Rapid Transport suburban railway system and LAUS http://www.lrta.org/luasindex.html Dublin Light Raail System will bring you to the city centre which means you may not require your car for the day. Some events will have to be organised somewhere...ideas are needed for those events..guest speakers or a couple of get togethers to discuss Irish genealogy problems at a prearranged venue.
I am looking at things for people (who may be spending a Friday to Sunday at the Irish Meet) to do. A friend and myself took a City Sight Seeing Tour of Dublin yesterday and can recommend this Tour. A bus leaves from a stop at the Gresham Hotel in O'Connell Street every ten minutes. The Tour lasts about and hour and ten minutes...the drivers give an excellent commentry. There are about twenty stops where you can leave the bus to have a look at a specific place of interest. You then catch another bus on the Tour and can get off at the next place you want to see. It was cold and raining :( so my friend did not want to get off to look at any of the places :( Among the places where you can get off to view along the route are..Trinity College, the National Gallery, St Patrick's Cathedral (Anglican), Christ Church Cathedral (Anglican) ..you get off to view this at Lord Edward Street, Guinness Storehouse and the National Museum. Dublin has no Catholic Cathedral but it does have a Pro Cathedral in Marlborough Street http://www.dublintourist.com/details/st__mary_s_pro_cathedral.shtml
I noticed another tour in Dublin whilst I was there..the Viking Splash Tour This looks ood fun..I am sure many people will be trying this one when they come to Dublin. Will you have got your lawnmower and cut the grass by then ??? If the place is overgrown with grass it might not be worthwhile organising a tour to such a site unless you would like an organised work party to make the place neat and tidy :D

1) How do we go about finding all the Rootschat members living in Ireland ??? We need as many as possible to attend the event. It is difficult to know the location of members who omit mentioning their whereabouts on their profiles.
2) Accommodation. This may not be necessary as regards where people sleep at night. Probably many people will make their own arrangements in that respect but as the list of those attending gets lengthier we may have to consider booking places where we can have meetings and possibly evening functions. It is quite possible this could prove to be a real headache. We need to look at the question of the lastest dates we can book possible venues. I doubt we could start phoning the day before one is required.

I think this planned event has enough interest now to ensure a reasonable turnout with enough warning. I don't think it matters who lives where - we should just advertise the event and see who wants to go. I will be hoping Dublin is selected as I am more interested in that area (see previous ramblings!) and I can fly there for about 7p from Leeds Bradford. ;)
Accommodation should be fairly easy to organise on an individual basis if we keep away from the main holiday times shouldn't it?
I think we (you ;) ) need to decide the location (Dublin or Belfast) based on the poll and then give a range of dates for people to decide from. It will hopefully then take on a life of its own! If we are talking about 2007 it would be sensible to leave any decisions until after the summer I would have thought.

Sarah mentioned that a banner about the Irish Meet 2007 could be shown at the top of the home page so that more people could learn about the event. Membership stands at almost 30,000 so a very small percentage is showing interest in the event at the moment. Would it be too early for a banner to raise some more interest??? Dublin..June, July or August next year Those seem to be the best months. That would mean people in UK and Ireland who have children will be able to bring them too. Would it be a better idea to run the poll, decide upon a specific month and then have the banner on the home page to raise more interest ???
A small one day event in Belfast this year at the end of July, last Saturday as Steve suggested. Meet at Linenhall Library..they have a small self service area so a we could have cuppa and a look round..then lunch somewhere and at 2.00pm have a tour round the City Hall before going to the Ulster Museum for an hour or so.
I suppose there should be a thread for the one day event and a poll to see whether people prefer June, July or August in Dublin next year.

My personal view is that its a bit early yet to be advertising an event thats over a year off - but I may be wrong. The poll you set up has identified Dublin as the location - perhaps you now need to organise a poll (if you don't mind) to firm up on a date. It may be that people would prefer it to be sooner (I would!) and then we could start the advertising/organising in earnest. What do you think?

Next years meet depends on date as my daughter is getting married mid July 2007, I will be on holiday last part of August - and I am limited on amount of leave I can take. Would love to take part if date is right and leave permits!
