George Drake buried Aylesbeare 1701
« on: Saturday 18 October 14 13:59 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have access to the Aylesbeare PRs?

I have a burial for George Drake at Aylesbeare on 18th Oct 1701.

Trouble is, I have attached this burial record to 2 people -- father and son!

Can anyone see if the burial is for a man of about 38 or an infant of around 6 months?

thanks :)

Hi Marmalady

The register entry for 18th October 1701 says "George Drake Jun: was buried in woollen."

The next burial for that name at Aylesbeare is in 1730.   It reads:

Drake (Mr. crossed out) George Drake Gent in woollen March 4.

I hope this helps sort it out!

Thanks for the look-up :)

Am still somewhat confused tho.
Would the term "jun(ior)" be applied to a 6month old child? Wouldnt "infant" have been a more usual description?

These two are the third & fourth generation of George Drakes, the earlier two generations having already died. So similarly, would "junior" be applied to someone whose father of the same name had died nearly 30 yrs earlier?

But on double checking the birthdates of the children there is a daughter born early 1702 (tho she could be a posthumous child) and another possible in 1705

So for now, will go with the 1701 death being the baby and the 1730 death that of the father

Hi Marmalady

It think if there are other children baptised after the burial that's a pretty good indicator that the father is still alive!

Also, are you sure the child is 6 months old?   Do you have a birth date for him or just a baptism date?

Good luck!

Yes, a child born a few months after the fathers death could be posthumous -- but in this case there is one child bpt a year after the Oct 1701 burial, and then another  some 4 yrs later -- which is too long a stretch for any pregnancy!
Plus i have now found another burial for an earlier infant George from the same family in 1693 -- who is also described as "George Junior".

So now I am sure this burial is of baby George, and father George didnt die for another 30 years!
