BOLTON Northumberland, Durham, Leicester Richmond (YKS)
« on: Friday 11 November 05 13:02 GMT (UK) »
I'm conducting a one-name study of the surname BOLTON, primarily those of the North East of England, including East Lothian Scotland. Known branches of my own family of North Shields Northumberland and Ebchester Durham moved to Leicester (John Adams BOLTON (doctor)) and Richmond Yorkshire (George Henry BOLTON (veterinary surgeon)).

I'd love to hear from anybody else with similar interest.

Sadly the Geocities websites were discontinued by Yahoo, so my website is no longer there.
I have however got lots on various northerly Bolton families on Ancestry.com
The tree is called "Various Bolton Families from the Census" and covers primarily Northumberland, Durham, Cumberland and increasingly, Yorkshire.

Hi Lynxafrica – My 3xG Grandfather’s second wife was a Bolton. I am descended from his 4th wife – so any Bolton descendants are half-cousins of some degree. The specifics are;

Sarah Bolton, spinster, married Thomas Clark, widower from Startforth, on 25 Oct 1813, at St. Mary’s Chapel, Rokeby, North Riding, Yorkshire (this is near Startforth / Barnard Castle). I do not have any birth data for Sarah, nor know her parents names, or her home parish (I have not found any other Bolton’s in Rokeby Parish).

They had two children;
Hannah Clark – Baptized 31 May 1815 at Holy Trinity Church, Startforth. It appears that Hanna married a Richard Tunstall, in 2nd quarter, 1838 – but I have no further information on her.

Sarah Clark – Baptized 12 March 1816 at Holy Trinity Church, Startforth.  She was buried at Holy Trinity Church, Startforth, just four months later on 6 August 1816.

Thomas Married for a third time on 15 June 1825. I have not yet found any death / burial information for Sarah (Bolton) Clark, but I would guess she died between 1816 (birth of second child) and 1825 (when her husband remarried).

If you have any information to share about Sarah Bolton or possible Bolton connections / relations for this area (Rokeby / Startforth / Bridge End) that would be great. Thanks.

Kind Regards –
Chico -
CLARK - Bridge End, Startforth, North Riding, Yorkshire & Barnard Castle, Durham
+ TODD nee SIMMONETTI - Richmond, Leyburn North Riding, Yorkshire
 |== CLARK (Smith) - Lartington, North Riding Yorkshire
    |== (Smith nee Clark) GARBUTT - Thornley, Durham
    |== CLARK (Kime) - Guisborough, North Riding Yorkshire
 |== (Clark) COLLEDGE - W. Hartlepool, Durham

Hi

What an interesting man Thomas Clark appears to be: rather unable to successfully keep a wife alive for very long  :D

I'm none the wiser as to Sarah Bolton, but I'll keep looking.

Quite a number of the BMD's are available on Freereg.org.uk

Here's what I found today:

1. Mary Unknown
   Marriage - not known
   * son Thomas Clark, born 1811, died 1813 - baptised Startforth 1811
   Mary's death/burial not known
 {EDIT: Subsequently found the Hutchinson info and agree this was Mary Hutchinson. Also found the two other bapts for Barnard Castle for Hutchinson Clark 1806 and Jane Clark 1808}
2. Sarah Bolton
   Marriage 25 Oct 1813 at Rokeby Chapel, Yorkshire
   * daughter Hannah born 1815
   * daughter Sarah born 1816 [buried 1816 Startforth aged 4 months]
   Hannah's death not known

3. Elizabeth Coates (Coates being married name - widow at marriage to Thomas Clark)
   Marriage 15 June 1825 at Holy Trinity, Startforth, Yorkshire
   Elizabeth died 1827 Bridge End, Startfort
   Buried 17 JUL 1827 Holy Trinity, Startforth

4. Mary Hall
   Marriage 29 Sept 1829 at Holy Trinity, Startforth, Yorkshire
   * daughter Mary Ann, born around 1832, Startforth
      Mary Ann married ? Henry Shaw
   Mary died 1832, Bridge End, Startfort
   Buried 05 FEB 1832 Holy Trinity, Startforth

5. Jane Stephenson
   Marriage 4th Quarter 1838 in Teesdale Registration District
   Appears as Jane Clark on 1841 and 1851 Startforth census
   Jane died 1859, Bridge End, Startforth
   Buried 06 MAY 1859 Holy Trinity, Startforth

Thomas Clark
   Possibly born at Cleatham nr Darlington c1784
   Thomas died 1862 Bridge End, Startforth
   Buried 02 JAN 1862 Holy Trinity, Startforth

Regards
Rob Bolton

By getting the marriage certificate for the 1838 marriage, you should then know the name of Thomas Clark (the elder)'s own father, and his father's profession.

Although if you go by the 1783 baptism at Staindrop for Thomas Clark, of Cleatlam, son of John & Jane Clark, I suspect you have the right Thomas
