John Rudgeley aged 50 buried 5th June 1846 in Churchstow. Abode recorded as "Union House".
(Find My Past & can also be checked here: http://www.our4bears.net/parishes/Churchstow/Churchstow_intro.htm)

The Union House would be the Kingsbridge Union Workhouse, which was in the parish of Churchstow, although that area is closer to Kingsbridge town centre.

Here's some info about the Kingsbridge Union (I go there all the time to Palladium Builders!)

Thank you so much for that information, would there be any information on his occupation or where he was born?

Hi, thank you for your help. I had found this marriage and I think this could be my John Rudgley. I think I have found them in St Andrews Plymouth in 1841 as Rudley. John and Mary are give as age 30. John is shown as not born in the county.

In 1851 they are in Leeds under the name Phillips. I am not sure if John Rudgley died and Mary is now with a John Philips or if they have changed their name? This John is a wireworker and was born in London which would fit as in 1861 Mary born Devon is in London now a widow. Her son Edwin or Edward? Is living with his mother and his new wife his occupation is soldier. He marries as,Rudgley and then some weeks later marries the same woman again as Philips. I find him in later census as Phillips still in the army but i don't think they had any children. On his marriage certificates he gives his father as John Rudgley  & secondly Phillips both deceased a sailor.

My line of the family have always thought they were Rudgley's.

This looks like it will be one of those things we will never know the answer.
